30 isn't that old for a CB! Lucio joined Inter when he was like 32 and he's having the best season of his life! Carvalho too is over 30. But £8m sounds like a lot for Squillaci, which is what Inter paid for Lucio.
 
We have to pay the money. I am happy we are just getting another centre back with experience. If it takes 8mill then just spend the money.

The funniest thing I have heard though is that Fulham will let us have Schwarzer for Vela PLUS cash :LOL: if that happens I will be extremely pissed off.

Let'em have Schwarzer then and let's go for Shay Given, who's a fantastic keeper with a great character. That would be AMAZING :)
 
If we can get Given from Man City and another CB then we will have a great chance this season imo.

But Man City would be stupid to sell/loan him to us as we are in direct competition with them for 1st-4th places in the league. Hopefully they are stupid :DD
 
It's all over newspapers now. It is reported that Mancini gave him the go ahead with the transfer.

Given is 3 years younger than Schwarzer and, let's face it, a much better keeper. Now that's a goalkeeper worth splashing the cash out for!

Metro already has headlines "Almunia to quit Arsenal if Given joins". Jeez these guys are fast :LOL:

If all of that really happens, I'd say Take Flappiandski with you!

The hierarchy could be Given, Manone, Sczesny.

Warren Barton a commentator in the states told on the Highlight show. That He phoned Given and was told he was off to Arsenal. Barton is ex Newcastle player and England NT. I think Fulham wanted Vela on loan not a switch. Funny we should do the same to barca swap messi for Fab lol

He is much better than what we have and he will be welcomed with open arms. If you didn't get Van der sar and you were still chopping and changing through keepers, you would be thankfull for Given aswell.

He will give the defence a bit more confidence and he is a really good keeper imo. If we can sort out the defence, our team can be a real force in all competitions.

We are not saying he is the best in the world, but he is a really good keeper that is used to the premiership and if he does come I will be very happy.....until he drops a clanger in his first game ;))

On a side note, I've read that Wenger wanted to sign him 2 years ago from Newcastle at £8M. So the interest surely is there, but Arsenal would have to dig a lot deeper than for Schwarzer it seems.

If Wenger wanted to buy him 2 years ago why didn't he?

I was hoping we would sign him then. But at the time there didn't seem to be a sniff of us going for him, which suprised me.

Surely he would have come to us rather than City at the time, if Wenger really did want him then?

He will be worth quite a bit more than Schwarzer. Schwarzer would proably be around 3mill and Given probably around 6-8 I guess? worth it imo.

Because Newcastle were cash strapped, got relegated and Citeh probably offered a shitload of ££££

He would be much more expensive than Schwarzer, I agree. All I hope is that Wenger spends the money this time! I don't know how much was our rejected bid for Scharzer, but he needs to pay a lot more to Citeh if we are to get Given

I'm sure we will make increased offers for them.

Frimpong just highlights how fucking unlucky we are with injuries. Even though he would have only played in the Carling cup and maybe early Fa (depending on who we play) it would have been great to see him after an impressive pre season.

There was that rumour about the spurs builder burying a spurs shirt under the ground when building the Emirates....I am getting more and more certain that we are cursed with injuries because of this ;))

BTW, it's a shame about Frimpong as well... I was there at the Emirates during pre-season and he impressed me.
 
It seems to me Wenger is trying to Address our frailties at last. He is obviously looking for both another defender and a goalkeeper. He knows he needs to start doing better soon and he knows some of the youngsters he has put his hope into, are not performing as well as he would like now.

I hope if Given is a possibility then Wenger will try and get him. But the problem is all the other clubs know that we are desperate for a keeper now, so they will try and bump up the price to silly levels.

lets just wait and see what happens.

I reckon the liklihood is that we get schwarzer for about 2.5-3mill after everything I have read.

Things are shaping up it seems, now we have 2 targets for CB as well (Squilaci and Spahic), one of them might come. The only thing still worrying me is that old Song backup issue. Frimpong was looking good to fill this spot, but now we might need again an extra DM, on loan at least...

City will be more likely to sell him to Fulham though because of the compitition from us.

Yeah it would be nice to have a back up for song aswell, but we cant have everything it seems.

silly levels? doubt it. for example, givens asking price wont be over 10m for example and even for 10m he is worth it.


GK's are dead cheap. they aint priced like c ronaldo you know so buying a world class proven goalie is easily doable for 10m

10million for a 35 year old keeper is quite silly imo. He is a good keeper but he is not world class imo. Keepers do go on for longer but still, there is still no gaurantee that they will last like a Van der Sar. great keepers seem to wain at around 36 definately 37-38 upwards. So we would be paying 10million for a couple of seasons.

Schwarzer is 39 I think, so if we want him we will probably have to spend about 3million...how many seasons will we get out of him? nobody knows?

I would like either of them for now and I would definately spend the money on Given, because I want to win something soon. But the money will still be much more than they are worth.

EDIT: just had a look at the most expensive goalkeepers and the top two;

Buffon at around 32-33million was 23 when he went to Juventus. (this is jsut the exception though - ridiculous amount of money, but atleast they could get plenty of years out of him)

The next expensive was Barthez to Man Utd when he was 29 I think for 7.8million.

Cech was around 7mill when he went to chelsea again much younger at the time of moving.

So paying 10million for Given at 35 definately does seem silly :PP

That might be true, but he is 39, not many goalkeepers get beyond that point and keep playing to a high standard. So I expect him to deteriorate sometime soon, he would definately be a very short term solution imo.

Peruzzi? Even Craig Gordon joined Sunderland in a deal that could reach £10m.
 
Maybe but it's true.

Given is a BRILLIANT shot stopper, but the rest of his game isn't all that and because shot stopping is the stuff that catches your eye, it makes him look better than he is, especially if he plays for a team you only see in highlights on MOTD.

I said all this ages ago in the City thread and generally got brushed off as WUMming but I genuinely believe it's true. Despite being rated as a top class keeper by many fans and pundits, he's never played for a top 4 club in all that time, and all of them have needed a keeper at one time or another.

He can't organise a defence, his positional sense is average and his distribution is pretty appalling to be honest. He's a good keeper but not good enough for you and he's over rated because of his hollywood saves, which like I said he's very good at. Most keepers peak in their 30's and Shay has been displaced by a 22 year old playing his 2nd full season.

Schwarzer is 37 and Given is 34.

Still, £10M would be too much for him. Plus, Wenger reportedly offered £8M 2 years ago. I doubt he would pay more 2 years later... So maybe £6-7M? If so, definitely worth it in my opinion.

Both are quite good but I like Given better cause he's younger, thus would last for some 2 seasons more, and also I really think he's more consistent. (although the only blunder from Schwarzer that I can remember was that one against us last season at the Emirates)

Schwarzer is 38 in two months :PP so is really at the end of his career, both Jens and Seaman started to get shitter at this age.

10million was just because of what jonney said earlier. But I wouldn't be suprised if City put that price on him, because they know how desperate we are and plus they are selling to a rival so they will ask for a premium from us.

I admit I haven't watched both Schwarzer and Given on many occasions but from what I have seen Given is better imo and is younger, so provides a bit more stability to the club in general.
