Arsenal Thread

I believe we need a spark, or a star player cause we keep struggling against top four opposition, wenger should be urge to sign Ozil now.

Another attacking midfielder? Sure, we only have 5 of them!

I understand why you believe that, judging by yesterday's match. But the issue there was that Liverpool played a rigid defensive-line, a back-line of 4 followed by a line of 2 or 3 in front of it that continually pressed the players in possession. By keeping this line consistent throughout the game, it meant that the Arsenal players had little space to run into or to supply passes to from central positions - where we are generally our most productive. It meant that we spent much of the game trying to draw Liverpool player's out of that line by moving the ball all across the width of the pitch, but still not being able to get in front of the Liverpool defence. Wenger guessed that this would happen, and I suppose that is principally why he started Eboue; not just for his physical presence and energy, but for the fact that he is one of our better crossers of the ball (Not the best though, that accolade goes to Rosicky). However, I don't think Wenger could have predicted that most of the crosses would come from Sagna and Clichy and let's face it, their crossing ability isn't of a sufficient enough standard, particularly Clichy. Sure, they can get height on their crosses but there is little aim. They don't really pick out a player, they perform a "Hail Mary" kind of cross and hope for the best. And sure enough, the cross will be too high for Chamakh and so it will go all the way to...Arshavin. And that's the problem. If we're going to resort to crossing from the by-line when we can't create in the middle, then we definitely need to work on the crossing ability of our wide players in training. You can't buy a player imperious in the air and then give him Walcott's crosses! That's like buying Walter Samuel and then giving him Tal Ben Haim as a defensive partner.

It could have been broken more easily than that, Liverpool's defence didn't look great on the counter-attack. But of course, a counter-attacking move means letting the opposition have possession of the ball; most likely in your half. And that's a majorly faulted stratagem.

Its not attacking players you need. You need players at the back who can be relied on so that your existing attacking players can "be themselves" and play the way we know they can. You have some of the best young attacking players in the country. If you stuck any one of them into the Chelsea side, I bet they would be a hit.

yh that comment makes sense Rune freeing the attacking players what not, Although I think Verm n Koc partnership is starting to gel .We didn`t play with a natural DM like in Song I`m a afraid he`s the only player we have Diaby is always going to lean more in the attack. Saying that I rather concentrate on the back line more and more clean sheets is in order. Everyone keep saying the battle is btw the 3rd n 4th spot argggh!

Only saw the highlights, but I thought we did ok yesterday.

Definate red for Cole I thought, what the hell was he thinking?! trying to bring round the Liverpool fans and show he has passion etc but ended up looking like a right cunt  totally unnecessary.

Koscielny played well I thought. Second yellow for him was a bit harsh, looked like the ref trying to even things up.

Nasri I thought played well, be nice to see him and fab in the centre together this season (if Arsene plays him there). He looks hungry and always looking for the ball.

Almunia did at least one good save :)) I actually don't blame him too much for the goal. you would probably expect the player to hit it hard and low into the opposite corner from that position and he leathered it. But to let in a goal at your near post is never ideal.

At the end of the day I thought we were the better team. Liverpool did a good defensive job, but they were at home and really should have taken the game to us a bit more. but I guess as soon as they went to 10 men that was hard for them to do.

Glad to see Reina fuck up after his whole part in the Fabregas Barca shirt affair :DD

I wonder who will play in defence now that Koscielny is out against Blackpool? we really need another defender.

Yes, excellent there was a match. I simply don't represent as the goalkeeper of Liverpool was insulting to pass such ball in the ending of a match, well such happens. Now the Arsenal needs to prepare to very, in my opinion, to an uneasy meeting with Blackpool which in this round has confidently crushed Wigan.:JAY:

I wasn't impressed with our display. It can be deceiving when you just look at the highlights, but I watched the whole match and I thought they didn't have enough heart. For a long time during the 2nd half Liverpool was better than us and, already reduced to 10 men, they were all over us really. For some moments it looked as though we were the ones with 10 men!

Sorry if I sound pessimistic here, but I saw the same old problems:
1) Dodgy defending
2) Carelessness when passing the ball inside our own field (like the silly mistake that originated their goal)
3) That almost masturbatory football with irritatingly unproductive possession without enough shots on goal (especially when we had an extra man)

What a contrast to last season's 6-0 at Everton! Ok, Fab and RVP weren't playing, I'll give you that, but they really should have done better against a 10 men Liverpool.

Always have a few silly bet's with mates before the season starts a tenner on Huddersfield finishing above Wrexham in their respective Divisions, a Tenner on Leeds getting promotion, that kind of thing.. I also have a mate who has put a tenner on Arsenal finishing outside the top four, he actually put fifty quid on it at the bookies too, to finish 6th I think...

Just to the Arsenal followers on here where, given a ton in your pocket where would you put them this season, I'm struggling to go higher than fourth if I'm honest...

you saw the whole match so you know more than me.

But i have read a few match reports and from what I had seen, Liverpool were superior to us for about 15-20mins in the second half, then it was back to us and them defending. We had the better first half (by all accounts?) But sometimes it is harder to play against 10 men as the tactics all change and become more restrictive.

But it was the first game of the season playing Liverpool at Anfield. Fab and Van persie (even though persie came on near the end) are our best players and we had two new players playing who need to get used to it all.

Plus we didn't have Song who is a big player for us also.

I just think it is too early to say anything just yet. lets wait and see about 5 games in, if it doesn't get better then we can start being worried.

think fabregas mind-set is with barcelona thats why he diddnt play. he came back the same time has van persie and both featured in the final and van persie clocking up MORE milege during the world cup than fabregas makes me wonder whats fabregas excuse for not even being in the bench.

somethings fishy. maybe fabregas is at home sulking.

 you are worse than the tabloids.

Wenger chooses the team. Fabregas doesn't choose himself, so he can't have an excuse about not being on the bench?

I`m a memeber of AST I get invitation 2 weeks after the meetings

yeah the funny bit was they thought they will hammer the YB too...they were lucky the YB ran out of gas they missed 3 sitters in the 2nd half. Why were the Spurs passing the ball around like if they were leading...very arrogant or happy to be a float lol

so why wasnt our captain and our best player on the bench if his not injured? both song and van persie made it?

enlighten me pal. did he drink too much sam migual to drown his sorrows for not going to barcelona hench why his at a worse state than van persie?

Fabregas was ill probably drank water in Mexico. I thought I posted that already must of been other site.

Nasri is out for a month  knee surgery he is made out of tissue paper.

So, in the Portuguese papers today, Benfica supposedly put a 4M€ bid on Armand Traoré, your left back. Is he any good? Worth the money?

He won`t go...he`s fast and always crossing which make him a good prospect. He`s more of a winger than a fullback.

Traore isn't that good imo and if we get 4mill euros I think we will take it.

I can't believe Nasri is out! so fucking depressing.

Jonny you can't keep reading things into things (if that makes sense :PP)

The Barcelona thing is over for now, he said himself he was concentrating on playing for Arsenal now. He isn't going to sulk, have you ever known him to sulk and act in that way? I haven't.

Wenger would have had his reasons why he didn't play him. As beboq said it looked like he wasn't 100%.

We are going to have the press saying his heads at Barcelona, every time he mis kicks the ball or has a bad game. Which is going to be frustrating enough without Arsenal fans doing it aswell.

I take it there will be no takers here, they'll need thousands to even get close...

I would buy some if I had a couple of hundred pounds spare :DD

Maybe when I start working again i will get one. I really like the idea of it.

I just need £9500 for a whole share! Yee Haa!

I`m looking into giving for the cause for me it cost more I use dollar$ so starting at $156.00. My son is starting to drive he needs a car I won`t be driving him around $7k.

0k! Sebastien Squillaci (French) from Sevilla looks to be heading this way.At 30 I`m sure he is here for short term does this mean Wenger will change up a bit bringing old mixed w/ young I like it. I`m expecting Schwarzer 37 coming soon by next week the lastest. I would Luv It! if we got Gago! on the cheap on the last day.

traore leaving will put us (-) another defender and HG at that :(

Traore might leave to Portugal because Wenger certainly wants to give Gibbs more playing time.

Squilaci really seems to be coming: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/a/arsenal/8928237.stm
I don't know what to make of this. I read somewhere else that the bid is around €8M! For a 30 year old?...

I haven't heard this rumour about Gago... A defensive midfielder in the mould we needed for a long time. But would he settle to be Song's backup?
