Arsenal Thread

But you have yourself a catch-22 there. The only way he can get confidence back is to play games but we aren't prepared to play him because he may make mistakes, and because he makes mistakes because of a lack of confidence we can't loan him out or sell him to clubs playing at a sufficient enough standard for him to prove his ability.

And it's not just the keeper that's the problem. It's a lack of cohesion and communication between the entire back-line, although it is of course part of a keeper's job to marshall the defence. It's all well and good bemoaning Almunia and Fabianski, but there are big mistakes caused by the defensive unit as a whole. Look at the match against Spurs towards the end of the season, look at the first leg against Barcelona (and also the second leg). Sure we can keep bringing in defenders who, individually, are excellent defenders but that doesn't fix the problem - just look at Atletico Madrid, they suffer a similar kind of persistent defensive/keeping problem as us but on a more crippling scale.

Having a keeper that the defence can rely on and they can trust will make our defence a hundred times better I think.

Koscielny i don't think is seen as a starter just yet, but as backup for a while (I think it will take him a while to get used to Prem). I think Wenger is still in the hunt for the partner for Vermaelen. That new player still needs to build up a relationship with the rest of the back four and keeper before we can start looking solid at the back. i think Djouru might be Vermaelens partner for the beginning of the season.

But I do think if we have a great keeper, it will make a HUGE difference to our defensive capabilities.

what a minute catch-22 didn`t Lemon proved he did little wrong and was given the cold shoulder giving Almunia the nod ? Flappy has prove way too many I mean CL ,League and Cup experience.

It`s like weighing a person everyday to see how many stones he`s gain? How bout loaning him out to another club. He doesn`t command the backline I bet his dog doesn`t acknowledge his present fxxK me. Why is he even on our squad list

Of course. If we sign a keeper who can command and co-ordinate the back-line, as well as look strong in his own positioning (A big fault in both Almunia and Fabianski), then we should quell our defensive troubles. But you said that he can only be a good keeper if he can rectify his confidence (as well as other eatures), but also said that you'd rather Fabianski. But like I said before, confidence will only come from successful performances in matches. And if he isn't played, then he isn't going to get confidence. Hence the catch-22. Personally I'd like Wenger to either sign a vocal, authoratitive keeper like Federico Marchetti or a commanding defender and a positionally astute and consistent keeper, like Igor Akinfeev.

I believe Koscielny will start immediately this season and I see no reason why Wenger wouldn't throw him straight into the fray. He started Vermaelen straight away last season, even though he hadn't been given that much time to build up a partnership with Gallas, and well...it worked, didn't it? And considering Koscielny's performances last season for Lorient. The fact is, he was one of the best Ligue 1 defenders last season (Not THE best, but one of the best). Not only was this proved by his many impressive peformances last season, but it was also proved by the statistics: 328 Defensive clearances (the most in Ligue 1), 159 Interceptions (the most in Ligue 1) and a 59% success rate in aerial battles (compared to Vermaelen's 58%). There's more of a basis to start Koscielny as soon as possible than there was Vermaelen last season. So I personally believe Koscielny will start straight away, but I'm doubting whether Vermaelen has the maturity or the reading of the game that Gallas had to cover Koscielny's mistakes. So like you, I have doubts as to whether we're going to see an immediate gel.

And beboq, for all his mistakes Fabianski has got quite an impressive record. 16 clean sheets in 34 appearances, apparently. Plus, Fabianski shows elements of being a potentially very good sweeper keeper, and considering how terrific Lehmann was in that role it makes sense to keep battling on with Fabianski, in the hope that he may one day emulate him. That, I suppose, is why Wenger has stuck with him. Having said that, Fabianski will have to do a lot of improvement on his positioning, command of the area, distribution and handling to be even half as good as Jens.

Please mate...don`t go there I admit I was wrong when fab came on the seen after paddy left. I laughed when song was given the spot after flamini left. I refuse ...REFUSE ! to entertain the thought that flaptheballanski will come good. I don`t want to see it .I`ve decided he is liability

mertasacker is apparently in negotiation...dont know if its true but He could be the reliable and experienced Defender we need to go all the way this season...

Where is that Jonney?.. Is it bad/expensive parking at the ground even on non match days?...

It's quite expensive to park around emirates any day really but there should be spaces depending on the time. How many hours will you be there for and what time to and from?

I will have a look for you, I only live down the road :))

I think Fabianski can play in a lower league and be loaned out to gain confidence. So I don't think the only option is to play him to get him to gain that confidence. I would like to keep Fabianski, I just do not think he is ready to be our number 1 just yet. There must be a reason why Wenger rates him so highly (and your reasoning is probably why)

I wasn't trying to imply that Koscielny ability isn't worth him starting and being first choice with Vermaelen. I just think as you said it will take more time for him to gel with Vermaelen than it did with Gallas and Vermaelen.

So i think he will become first choice but it may take a few months. Djouru is fit and was playing very well before he got injured early last season, so if he can play like he was, then he will be good competition for Koscielny. Only because he has played in the Prem before and is used to it, I think Djouru might start for the early games and Koscielny will be brought in gently. (we will see anyway on Saturday/Sunday :)) )

Anyway we have lots of people out for our first game, I think if we get a draw we should see that as a very good result. I just hope all the players put in 100%

Laughable really. Browsing those news, I found what this guy has to say very true:
http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/opi...ark-Schwarzer-fit-the-bill-article549359.html

The same happened to United after Schmeichel and Ferguson had to struggle with Barthez and Howard (actually spending money in the process) until he saw good old Van der Sar would fit the bill.

Wenger needs a guy to deliver stability for 2 or 3 seasons until he has the right keeper ready as a long term solution - whether it is Szczesny or not.

Fucks sake you lot, talk about over-reaction.

This is what he said

"I have a double task. I want to become the No1 in the Arsenal goal and that would help me to realise my second target - to be No1 in the national team.

"Of course I don't know if I will play but I do believe I will as I played in many of the pre-season friendlies.

"I am 25 years old, it is a good time to establish myself in goal for good."

"It was the same when I started at Legia Warsaw," he said.

"Nobody knew me, there were arguments that I was not good enough to be No1 but I got that and moved to one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"I am ready for the next challenge. I've had no injuries recently, I've worked well and am really prepared to fight for the No1 position.

"I believe I am good enough to play regularly in a Premier League team."

What's so outrageous about that?

What would you rather, he came out and said "I am sorry Arsenal fans, I am not good enough for you, you are amazing I am just shitty keeper from rubbish Poland. Forgive me for having dared try to play for you."

Well Jumbo, of course the guy's not gonna give up like this and his only choice is to try showing some confidence. But it's very inappropriate for him to be talking about making it to the national team, considering that he can't convince anyone even at domestic level. Like, he's far far away from doing well at his own club so he should keep his head down, talk less and work more.

I guess you can sense the despair in all of us just by the prospect of having him as our no.1. The over reaction fits his performances.

so Schwarzer has put on a transfer request. i really hope he'll come to us. he's a good keeper, way better than what we have atm, and his price tag shouldn't be much high.
on a related note: no rumors about a defender...

Chamakh already made his mark! lol

Wasn't a very good cross but the fact that he NEVER gave up on it and CHALLENGED Reina, made him make a rare mistake and snatch an important point from this opening match.

And there's a lot more to come from him...

People will always blame Reina for this goal and rightly so but if it wasn't for Marouane doing what many others wouldn't have, Pepe would've never made that mistake in the first place and Arsenal would've walked out losers from this match.

p.s. I thought Galatasaray signed Rosicky a few days ago! Guess it never got 100% done then...

Well, the positive is We didn`t spanked Pool which would convince Wenger a buy is not immanent. Now, 1st game out of the way and to a very rejuvenated Pool. I said a draw would be practical n a lost a kick to the throat. Wilshire starting was great I think he gain confidence ,but let`s not make it a habit. If, we can get more players in the sooner the better.

Good shout PLF at least now we have a target in the middle w/ purpose, Chamakh is a threat to any keeper with his aerial presents
