Arsenal Thread

Woah! just the first game of a Friendly tournament. Don't think you can read too much into the performance. Especially with alot of players out.

Does the defensive coach teach the whole team to defend as a team? or does he just spend time with the defenders?

I still think we are always going to ship goals with the way we play and I would rather play the way we play. The goalkeeper is key, we need one that the players have faith in IMO.

Our new defender still needs time to gel into the team and also he might not be the first choice yet? It takes a while to get a good connection between the two center backs.

i know its just a friendly but the evidence is their and even vermahlen was concerned with our performance.

Had that been a premiership game thats 2 points gone mate and a win is what can make a difference of us winning a title or not.

i still think we need a new defensive coach. vermahlen, clichy, sagna, eboue, djurou and that new guy are all great defenders but cant defend as a team. even if we wa to buy puyol and rio, we still would defend the same as we do now.

something has to be done man

Yet again we almost blew it ;)

I hope wenger sorts that shit out before the liverpool game. defend like that againts the likes of torres and gerrard and where fucked

Going on the World cup, I wouldn't worry too much about Torres and Gerrard ;))

I've jinxed it now :PP

Well Done Gunners!!!!!! The tourney was good and the mix of players was even better. The league of coarse is different so I wouldn`t look at Chels ,MUTD, Pool , City or even Spurs losing a few of their preseason matches as failures nor is our wins. The purpose is for clubs to get the team in the direction to assemble their best option for the season. Frimpong and Wilshire did great and deserve a few minutes in games. Song and Fab is miles better and more effective then those two . Yes, I have concern for the back not reading or anticipating each other marking.

If I`m honest.... and deep ...deep inside you would agree. If we took our chances and scored 3 or 4 more goals. Do you think teams will try to score or try to defend more?

I have a major concern,we pass the ball very well effortless it`s the final ball that makes all the passing a dud. Example can we agree theo is lost after passing the last player? Why is it that no player knows where he is placing the ball to? Who in the ham-sandwich try to lob a 6'5" Keeper :CONFUSE: not once but twice. Theo doesn`t cross the ball even with Chamack the air-bender in the box. The defense wasn`t really poor just unlucky w/ the ball getting loose in front of a player. Djour made a mistake that he`ll do on the average 3x in the game. He does not mark well even though he`s a strong lad but his fellow backs need to know each other strength . Gibbs was caught up too far and kos try to cover his end and normally Song comes back to cover kos position allowing 2 at the back on fast breaks. So, Celtic did well to get that goal just like any other team would of done. Set-pieces are everyones weakness if the ball is in the perfect spot like the AC Milan game. There isn`t much you could do just hope he knocks it out instead of in lol .

IMO the defense needs more competition just as we have in the mids. Clichy/gibbs/traroe (Im happy) Eboue/Sagna (Im happy) kos/Vermaelen/Djour (needs more) Almunia/Fabinski/Mannone ( 1 gk) So to worry for the obvious in defense is too easy for the lack of players in the CB position and not enough quality in goal maybe. My attention would be at crossing the ball even though Theo made 2 assist. He had loads of possession of the ball in the final touches . If he can improve instead of kick n hope we can be in a better position ,because atm I rather persie plays on the wing.
Well Done Gunners!!!!!! keep on Filling that trophy cabinet lads! :BOP:

Yep we are definately not solid enough at the back...kos and verm are doing well but there is just something that you cant really describe that is missing....

Looking for a striker and another defender according to reports, nothing on the Keeper front...

I hate the shit that united fans sing about Wenger, but this infatuation with Fabianski is pissing me off.

Lehmann made 2 mistakes at the beginning of one season, and he was benched for Almunia. What the hell is going on here. Almunia has his faults, but it looks like Wenger will start with Flapianski as number 1. FFS.

Defender yes - Striker - maybe not. Maybe just wants someone to fill the number 9 shirt. lol

I have no faith in any of our keepers, One of them will have to step up this season and take control or we will probably be fucked again. It's such an important position to fuck around with.

On another front though I think we only need one more centre back and a keeper and we are pretty much sorted. I would like another defensive minded midfielder, but I feel we can cope without one for a while if Song is out for a bit.

Walcott is getting better and better on the wing I think and hopefully it will click this season. he was told by Beckham to just put in good crosses into good positions and let the forwards worry about getting onto them. don't know if that is the best logic, but it seems to be what Walcott is doing a bit more. His last ball is improving with every game imo and when he gets it right and is consistant we will benefit alot.

Anyway we will see in a couple of weeks :)) can't get much tougher than an opening game against Liverpool at Anfield.

Agree with IceMan.

Another striker? When we already have Van Persie, Arshavin, Bendtner, Vela and Chamakh attackh... If we do sign another, Vela and Bendtner might be a bit put off as they will see less chances to be playing.

The addition of Chamakh complements the others, as he's powerful in the air, like Super Nick. So when Nick can't play, we finally have that other striker with that extra dimension, which we lacked last season.
I wouldn't mess with that. Unless this new striker is a real gem at a real bargain price.

We definately need another CB. Wenger did the right thing taking out the trash (Silvesta, Gallas, Senderos) but now he still has to replace. I would like to see a British defender there, who knows the League's style and can add experience. Vermaelen is a gem, but him and Kos are both unexperienced in terms of Prem. I'd go for a British CB to partner Vermaelen. A mean bastard in the Keown mold :D

And needless to say, a real 1st choice keeper. We've been saying this for the last 2 years maybe.

I don`t get Why Persie n Fab are taking so long to comeback . Fab hardly put minutes in the WC and was off near the end on the campaign . Persie played lots in WC ,but missed most of the season. All fab is doing is using his WC winnings to travel around Spain like some sort of demigod  Wake up both of yous and start training yous millionaire hoes!

Take it easy beboq :)
Most players had 1 month rest, while both Fab and Robin have less than that since they played until the WC final.
It's fine by me, as long as they return in good conditions.

Oh BTW, I was at the Emirates yesterday and I thought Emmanuel Frimpong was very good! I don't know what became of Eastmond, but we might have in Frimpong the backup needed for Song.

I also managed to record on video Vermaelen's rocket that came off the post. Such a shame it didn't go in. Maybe I'll post it later on Youtube :)

A CB and a keeper have been the priority for a while and are the missing pieces.

I still think Walcott is basically being wasted away on the wings as I don't see anything he possess to be a winger other than being quick.

well Walcott is not looking anything like a striker either...hes finishing skill aint really good enough...The kid need to put his heart into every match but he just cant seem to do it...

Walcott gets alot of flak. He does put alot into every game IMO. he has been played as a winger for the last few years and I think he will do well there. he is still only young.

He does need to show now some consistancy with performances. Then I think he will come good, when his confidence is high.

He hasn't played in a strikers role for years so to say he hasn't looked like a striker is stating the obvious aswell. although I think he would be well suited in the role if he actually played there.

Walcott is dumb! Well I mean football-wise, he is all running running eventualy crossing without looking or some super powerful ones.
Better way to describe him is using Fergie words with a tiny change, Typical English!
The guy is like a robot programed to do that, and don't get me wrong, in what he was programed to do he is fantastic but is just not enough, specially with a team like Arsenal.

I posted the same thing earlier his crosses are too short and straight to keeper or in no mans land . I thing Eboue has the best crossing abilities on the right and that`s not saying much :CONF:

About forwards, i still think that Bendtner is not good enough for a European top team like Arsenal.
Bendtner is splendid for the likes of Fulham and Blackburn but not good enougf for Arsenal. I know most of you do not agree...

And being a former GK: Almunia is good...you don't need another GK, you need a team that defends as a team.

PS: i'm not really convinced about Chamakh too...he was absolutelu spelendid in France, but i'm not sure is the type of player for Arsenal.

Thought you guys couldn't have looked more 'Arsenal' if you'd tried in the bits of the Emirates Cup I saw. Lots of nice passing and great movement, coupled with a few good finishes but more wasted ones. Then conceding a sloppy goal and being disorganised afterwards. That said, you still won, so that's something!

Frimpong looks a right dirty b*****d. Just what you need imo. Oh and was it me or was Wilshere diving all over the place? Did he learn that at Bolton or something? He must have needed treatment 5 times in the Celtic match but was fine to continue. Good player mind.

The sloppiness is still there for Arsenal. Jsut showed in the Celtic game. I think it is down to them being cocky, which is something that has blighted us for ages.

We play well and go a couple of goals up, then the players think they rule the world and then start not trying. Then we let in goals and play badly. Was our story for the last few games of last season.

Everytime they do it, they say they have learned from it, but they never seem to. I just hope they actually do learn for this season.

We need more players with passion that fight in the games and want to do more. No matter what people think of players like Walcott and Bendtner, they seem to always be trying Imo. Fabregas is the same and Vermaelen, I would say Van Persie to.

But too many of our team do a few good moves and then think their job is done for the day. A player like Arshavin is the prime example of this. He had a great first season with us and is living off of that. Some games he looks so uninterested it's silly. But when he putshis mind to it he can be amazing and a match winner. I put Diaby and Denilson in the same breath as Arshavin.

but at the weekend we were still without Fab, Song and Van Persie our three key players along with a few more. So I am going to take all the positives I can and hope they iron out some of the negatives.

Wilshere looks class and now Frimpong is also looking great, hopefully they keep playing well and get their chances to shine. Also players like Diaby and Walcott need to start showing the world what they are made of and bring some real dynamism to their roles and consistancy.

All in all I am reasonably happy and looking forward to the season and think we can do well.

Vermaelen? it was wilsher :)

Oopsy, you're right

Wilshere was fantastic apart from that silly mistake (although it was too soft a penalty). He created a lot of chances there and showed he can be a tremendous playmaker. Rosicky was quality in that aspect as well.

But I still think Arshavin is perhaps the main offensive brain. No one is more incisive than him in that squad. Nevermind accusations of laziness, the man has moments of brilliance and sheer class, like that back heel to Walcott and the through ball to Chamakh a day before that.

Even though BobbyBox puts him in the same bunch as Denilson and Diaby, I think Arshavin can afford to look out of sorts sometimes. Because when he's on his day he's a match winner. I wouldn't say it's laziness in terms of workrate, because he does pressure high up the pitch and fight for the ball against guys twice as big as him. It's just being on really bad days, not producing and being unable to get into a mach. Diaby and Denilson, on the other hand, bring too little to the table. And the fact that they play more defensive roles, not tracking back and busting their guts really gets on my nerves.

To sum it up, Arshavin is a special player, really really dangerous; while the other two are just peasants. Sorry to disagree with you on this one, BobbyBox :)

I think you're being harsh on Denilson and Diaby. Denilson is the sort of player who's work goes unnoticed but he plays a vital role in the team, keeping things ticking over and recycling possesion, it might look like he's doing fuck all all game but he's actually quite useful.

Diaby is different, he's quite inconsistent but when he plays well he can be really dangerous I think. He just needs a solid run in the side and to focus.

I think I'm not that harsh mate. That image of Rooney's goal at the Emirates last season springs to mind. Denilson is there to make the gears move but also he is a defensive support, especially when replacing Song. He can't just jog like that. For a worker midfielder it's unacceptable that kind of laziness.

Diaby has some good moments - I liked some stuff he did at the WC, despite France's failure - but unfortunately he seems more and more like one of those eternal promises. He also seems lazy and should add more physicality to his game to start with.

You're right, rather than the players faults though I think the laziness and lack of tracking back is intrinsic with Wenger's management and style of play. He seems to place little or no emphasis on that side of things and all on the short passing and quick movements of the players.
