When I’m not selected for the squad, the team wins 2–1 or draws 1–1—there are goals.
In the eight matches where I’ve actually played, the team has scored only once—and, as it happens, I provided the assist.
I don’t call for the ball, and I don’t force the play. Yet, whenever I’m well-positioned in the box and do ask for it, the pass is always low and lacks accuracy. Should I drastically lower the difficulty setting? It doesn’t matter if I haven’t scored a goal yet; I just want my team to launch some attacks, even without my direct contribution.

I play the same way as you, and I play as a RB, so I normally don't impact the game.
In this scenario, the game difficulty mostly affect CPU vs CPU duels, and what I've observed (not to anyone's surprise) is that, the higher the difficulty, the better the AI plays artificially. This happens either by numbing down my players, making them do bad decisions, making them take weak shots, and making my defense system give away positions in order to the CPU to score.
Professional is, for me, the most balanced difficulty level. My team either wins, losses or draws as I would expect. Of course, draws are always a rare result, as either team gets boosted when being down on the score.
If you go down to Regular, you'll find the artificially enhanced better teams becomes yours. Your team will likely find a way to win every game, although it may still lose or draw.

I assume this conclusions play out differently if your BAL player is a striker, as you'll likely take advantage.
I hope that helps.
