Has anybody played these games?

Which is better?

I may buy/emulate them? I missed out on them but heard they are good

not sure which is better. never got around to finish 2. but 1 for it's time was probably not what everybody expected, but still, in my opinion, the best game of it's time. it was so god damn impressive and absorbing, i spent days just exploring and gambling and doing all the little things you could do.

if you can get around to play them, do so.

They're both brilliant games, but it's the kind of game you have to have a lot of patience to really enjoy. Just relax and enjoy the story and exploration, and soak in the atmosphere and music, and you'll love it. Unfortunately, Shenmue 2 ended with a cliffhanger, so don't get riled up when you realize that you may never learn how the story ends.

I think I may just play shenmue 2. It got better reivews plus I can play on xbox.

getting a dreamcast is a hassle as is emultors tbh.

They're both as good as each other in their own right. Hard to compare in terms of technical quality.

I personally have the fondest memories for Shenmue 1 as it was new and original but Shenmue 2 was just as good.

Playing these on the Dreamcast is the only way IMO. I picked up a big bundle and games for just under £30 recently - no hassle at all ;) - embrace the retro!

shemue 2 is like 30-40 quid on ebay. Shenmue about 10-15

dreamcast about 30 used

I think they have emulators but not sure how to use ...yet

If you like quick time events then these are the games for you

Haha, yeah, if there's one big fault with the Shenmue games, it's that they made QTE's popular (with developers). It was a decent way to make impressive interactive cutscnes back then, but nowadays they're being used as a lazy shortcut for the devs.

Thankfully, Shenmue is so much more than just the QTE's, which in fairness only occurs a few times during the games.

Shenmue was and will be my fav game ever, best thing on dreamcast, ive got a dreamcast emu and still play it now and again

DCEmu is the emulator for dreamcast then you need the external program to use a controller.

But these are two of the best games ever made.

Just remember the 1st hour of Shenmue is incredibly boring and you will want to start throwing things when you have to ask the 25th person if they saw the BLACK CAR ON THE DAY THE RAIN TURNED TO SNOW!!!

well ill be honest I never palyed more than 1 hour.

The problem is I have so many modern day games to play and games like fifa 12 career, bf3, bfbc2, football manager etc..

I just coudlnt fit shenmue in...i didnt appeal enough to play before these games

That's fair enough.

As I said the 1st hour or 2 of Shenmue 1 is really really dire, but it does start getting better once you finish Disk 1.
Even too this day I would prob put Shenmue 2 in the top 5 games I have ever played.

But the problem with older 3D games they just look really bad now and sometimes takes the love away from playing retro games.

I have not played either of them since I completed them years ago on the Dreamcast.

yeh compare to gta4 or sr3 or acb the worlds are nothing but at the time it was revolutionary

I remember playing Shenmue 1 and completing it, I went through that bad boy and discovered almost anything I could. It was really revolutionary for the time. I'm not sure how bad it looks these days (probably doesn't hold up too well) but it looked stunning at the time. I remember little stuff like getting a job, was a forklift truck driver, and wasted a ton of the cash playing old SEGA games down at the arcade in the town centre, such was the scope of the game.

Never got round to Shemnue 2 though, had already got rid of my Dreamcast by then. For nostalgia reasons I wish I hadn't now.

The wonderful shenmue......sparring with your brother in the dojo by the house, feeding the stray cat and its kittens, finding the sega saturn under the the telly in the lounge in the draw so you could play hang-on and space harrier in the comfort of your house with unlimited credits(who knew that),helping the boy who was being bullied and getting his football back, working at the docks, the arcade in the town with ash trays and fag butts, storking women, beating up thugs, working on your moves in the abandoned carpark, seeing it snow if you stayed in the town long enough for christmas, sega collectables, running home so you werent late.......i could go on and on,and a bit like my life at the time,i wish.

Shenmue 2 was also great...watching the tornados over hong kong, looking for the magic tree, afterburner, outrun, bare knuckle fighting, gambling, arm wrestling.I remember at the time that these had arcade perfect emulations of Yu suzukis famed games...oh,and darts!.

Absolutely revolutionary and they still hold up really well today despite what some will say, because theres really nothing like them...a little slice of japan..........oh and the flashbacks and memorys of dad, brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it.The emotive soundtrack and sound effects also need some credit. This was a absolute labour of love and the first shenmue had to be converted because it had already been made for the sega saturn.

Certainly in my top ten games of all time and the dreamcast was a joy to program on,the ps2 was under specced and a dog in comparison but everybody listened to sonys marketing garbage pre-release.A real shame because if the dreamcast had stayed, games would be five years ahead of what they are now,the ps2 stagnated the progression of games.First game system to offer on-line gaming and without it we wouldnt have the xbox or live.

I wanna be in my twenties again and relive it for the first time, failing that give me HD versions on the psn network or live,or just finish it SEGA.

This was more then just a qte game, you had a early version of the virtual fighter 4 engine used for fighting and sparring.
