After playing extensively on PC across the more recent iterations of PES (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021), I’ve come to the conclusion that the most enjoyable version to play in full-manual mode is 2018. Perhaps its more arcade-like nature, less simulation-focused than the later editions, makes it far more fun and varied—just as a video game should be.
Every time I play a match in PES 2018 immediately after playing PES 2020 or 2021, I notice the greater fluidity and responsiveness of the players. It seems that the animations for both outfield players and goalkeepers are more numerous and varied than in the later games. Furthermore, plays and goals never feel exactly the same; they seem less scripted, less predetermined. Yet the community isn’t keeping it alive in the same way they do with PES 2021.
