Apparently its a beast, but I'm a bit out of touch with PC Gaming that I've had to reply on a bit of help from the chaps at AVF.

So next is games...

I'm gonna sign up with Steam as that looks good. Then going to install;

Starcraft II
FM2010
rFactor
NASCAR4
PES6 - any help on patches here chaps? Dags, I know you mentioned patching this up recently?

Any other recommendations on what to get, where from etc. If anyone can also PM me any 'additional' information on some of these games too, would appreciate it as I'm also out of touch with that scene too ;)

COD4 / MW2 (heard MW2 is pants on PC due to hosting and cheats - still worth getting?)
BF:BC2
Mass Effect 2
GTAIV - worth it? Any decent mods?
Civ 5 when it comes out.
FIFA11 only if its the same engine as the consoles.

Thanks for any helps!

My recommendations game-wise (only available on the PC):

Arma 2
Crysis
Crysis Warhead
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat

These are games are must haves that you have to play on the PC if it's powerful enough.

PES6 patch-wise - Shollym's patch in the Evo-Web editing section.

Great rig your buying or building their mate.

For games i recomend these:

GTR evo
Mafia 2 when that comes out
Arma 2 combined ops(Military sim done in First/third person view, Ask placebo how epic this game is)
Fallout 3(Has 1000 of mods for it making the game 100 times better)
Oblivion(From the makers of fallout 3)
Guid wars(If your into coop rpg's that are similar to world of warcraft but free to play, no monthly fees!)

Theirs more but gotta jet home now. will come back to this thread and add more.

Very nice

Not sure why you got the soundcard?
What monitor will you be using?

GTA iv - get the Episodes as well
As you like driving get\or reinstall GPL and the updated cars\patches
A logitech g25 wheel?

the sound card takes away the strain that the cpu sometimes uses for sounds plus imo sound effects are just as important as visual effects in a game imo.I have dismissed games simply because the sounds where terrible.

I know, however I think onboard sound is as good as separate souncards these days. The terrible sound is due to the game engine not the card in your examples. I've removed my X-Fi and use my onboard sound and hae noticed no reduction in quality.
Also the Gfx card has HD audio I believe, which could be used depending on the monitor\speaker setup?

A couple of simple tweaks which can make a massive difference on a Windows 7 system:

"Windows Media Player network sharing using 33% of CPU resources"

http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7music/thread/9abc9abb-4c39-4e90-ae75-2f1cb02d5843

(Quoted from the BIS forums where I posted it originally:)

another thing in Windows 7 (maybe Vista as well not sure) which eats up huge amounts of CPU cycles and RAM for no apparent reason, "enhancements" on audio devices, even if none are selected apparently it has an impact, you need to tick the box "disable all sound effects" for every audio device you have, see pic below :)

Cheers guys. I felt the same about the sound card (was gonna leave it) but was convinced by avf that if I was going to build such a good system, then I may as well go the whole hog.

What sort of mods has fallout got jm?

Thanks for the win7 tip too Paul. Is that for all sound cards, or just if you use onboard?

Pb, good luck and take your time. You don't want to bend something by being in too much of a rush.
Steady away and you'll be fine. Good luck with connecting the front panel to the mobo, I never get those right first time.

I've done it! Took about 2 hours, but all working ok on initial fire up. About 20 fans going :)

Off to asda now to pick up a cheap keyboard and get windows installed.

Yup it took me nearly a day to get up and running. i got my parts on a friday and began assembling it later that evening then continued the next day.

You can view it all in this thread:

Call of duty 5 World at war. So many mods out there this game will never die. plus hosting your own server for your mates is a blast(google codutility for maps mods and much more)..

Woah Jonney you really know your PC stuff mate! I was always tempted to build a high end PC as my brother used to build them but I think I would go mad and break something if anything went wrong so I think I will just settle for a new MacBook Pro.

I think it is an excellent idea to buy a SOUND CARD, i recently upgraded my PC to a core i7 and cos the motherboard I bought only had 1 PCI slot I sold my X-Fi as thought surely onboard is just as good.

The very first thing I noticed was my GOD everything sounds shit....
When watching films with AC3 mainly, but even MP3's didnt sound quite as good, game performance is pretty similar, but after using my crappy onboard sound I quickly went out and bought a PCI-E X-fi Titanium.

Firstly, you got to choose the components that you need. To do this, you need some computer hardware knowledge. For example, you need to know the difference between basic hardware and those meant for gaming. For gaming purposes, some components are especially important; CPU, motherboard, video card, hard, drive, and memory. Besides that, PC for game should be equipped with good monitor, gaming keyboard, and gaming mouse. You can also opt to boost the sound card and you may want to consider an extra CPU cooler (PC heats up very quickly when playing games).

You can buy these parts at the local PC hardware shops or online. Usually, they are sold second hand but you can always buy brand new parts for optimal performance. Of course, the cost for brand new parts can be costly. When you build gaming computer, also consider the options of being able to upgrade your current PC performance. There are always new technology coming up and you may need faster performance for future games. Bear in mind also that different games have different system requirements. Make sure that you researched the component options thoroughly before choosing.

Basically, you save money and gain invaluable experience when you build gaming computer. Not to mention you'll have a PC catered specifically to meet your gaming needs. Before you start, remember to do thorough research on the different component options to secure the best deal. You can also find many tips to build gaming computer online.
