No transfers once league has started?

So I started a league with my brother, our 5th full Premiership season. 3 rounds in, I realized that we forgot to do some transfers that we'd agreed on. So I put the players in, and you can play with them in friendlies, but they're not in the team in the league. Is this a glitch or is it like that? Because of this we cant make transfers in January too?(halfway)
 
There's one way to get around this, by using an editor to copy the players you want over someone already in the team (a reserve player or someone), that's what we ended up doing.
