Nintendo Wii2 Announced

What do yous think Nintendo will come up with this time? A way to play 3D games on your current TVs without the need for a 3dtv and glasses? I don't know how but I sure hope so!

Probably a much better online system and remakes of all their popular games in HD and 3D.

Pretty sure Regis already commented on that it will not be 3D.

I hope it's pretty powerful. Not necessarily for graphics but for other CPU heavy things like physics, AI and so on. Otherwise they'll just end up in the same position again when MS and Sony release their new consoles in a couple of years.

It will be all about the games. If Nintendo keep re-releasing the same old tired franchises like Mario and Zelda, accompanied by a deluge of low-budget kiddie crap and shovel-ware then it will not be something I'm interested in.

Nintendo needs to try and reach out to the hardcore gamers once again, as they are the people that buy games in large numbers. The attach rate to the Wii is poor. The casual crowd lapped up the console but don't spend money on games.

I'll wait until long after release to see how this one goes. My Wii sits collecting dust so I'm not getting burned again.

I can't see it being a "proper" console, the next PlayStation and Xbox are the only ones worth considering as a non-casual gamer.

I'd say this is a pretty smart move, as I don't see a new Playstation or Xbox on the horizon.

They'll be lurking in the dark snatching up ideas alright..

@Jamezinho

Since when were Nintendo serious anyway? What if they stick to their winning formula? I know it might not work for long but it does work. They've been doing the same thing for so long and still racking up money. I can't see them abandoning their milking-the-cow games. And maybe this time they'll have the "powerful" hardware as to win the PS3 and 360 fans as well. This way they'll still keep all their exclusive Nintendo games plus be on PS3's and 360's level, if not better.

Meh.....

From the rumours it's nothing more then a WII2.0. Old tech with a gimmic. And with that I mean they are aiming to reproduce 5 year old tech (the console is said to be equal, or slightly more powerfull than the PS360). So the games will only look as good as the current generation. The only "new" aspect I've read so far is that it has a touchscreen controller. So in otherwords they have mutated a ds to link up with a better WII. What might work is that if it has the same specs 3rd parties can release the same games at the same time.

But then what's the point when we already have the PS360 anyway?

Old exclusive remakes in HD and possibly more ;)

I have to say that despite a strong dislike for the Wii, i am interested. Part of me thinks that Nintendo realises how stale the Xbox/PS3 market has become (and boy has it) and this is why they're aiming to bring a new console out before the next iterations of those consoles.

The thing about the Wii is that there is a ton of shovelware titles that no real person would touch but there are still so many good games on it (especially single player games). The motion controls made it really difficult to enjoy the console though, i don't want to have to lean forward to play the game - just wanna chillax.

So the games will only look as good as the current generation.

I've got no problem with that. I still think ps360 games focus too much on pushing the graphics over the gameplay, i can only imagine that it'll get worse as graphics get better as well. As long as it's HD with a decent framerate i don't think it's that big an issue.

They bought wii fit. The casual crowd lapped up the console because it was so cheap. There's rumours of this being $300-$400 on release, so presumably they aren't just going for the casual audience with that price. Part of me can't get away from the idea that they're going to implement some touch screen HD screen into the controller and the price of the controller adds to at least a quarter of the whole thing.

Yeah i'm never going to buy a console at launch again unless i've got some serious money stashed away. With this console coming after the Wii it's probably for the best to see how it actually pans out game support wise.

I don't think I'll ever buy a console on launch, never have in the past either.

Rip off prices, no third-party accessories, small/poor games catalogue, first-gen model (later models are usually released with bigger hard drives etc. plus the latest 360s are so much quieter and more reliable than the launch ones) etc.

I bought a Wii at launch, it broke.
I bought an Xbox 360 at launch, it broke.
I bought a ps2 at launch, it broke.

There's a trend here.

I take your point. Nintendo has always looked to attract the younger and/or more casual player. However, go back to the SNES, N64 and Gamecube - these were all serious machines that went toe-to-toe with their respective rivals of the time, and were all very much up-to-date in terms of their capability. These consoles were littered with great hardcore games, many of them iconic, as well as the Nintendo classics like Mario and Zelda. The SNES, and later the N64 were what first got me hooked on ISS, and Goldeneye is an all -time classic.

There's nothing on the Wii that will be remembered in the same way as a hardcore gaming classic. Nintendo chose to keep the Wii a generation behind and focused on the motion control gimmick, and hence lost the hardcore. If they do it again by releasing a console only slightly better than the 360 then the cycle will repeat itself once more.

This console will be targeting the hardcore market a lot better than the Wii ever did.

From what I have heard and read:

  • It wont have the Wii name.
  • It will be in high definition. 1080p.
  • The console will feature a traditional controller. i.e. with 2 analog sticks, d-pad, buttons and triggers as well as a camera and touchscreen that will stream content from the console.
  • The console will be more powerful than the PS3 or 360. Expect a powerful 3/4 core (maybe PowerPC architecture to ensure backwards compatibility) CPU with a GPU from AMD in the range of Radeon 4770 to 4890 HD. In terms of RAM it will be 1-2GB.
  • It will most likely use dual layer DVD's.
  • It may incorporate a second standard controller that is similar to the Wii Remote but will offer a higher degree of precision than even PlayStation Move.
  • Major 3rd party developers such as Ubisoft, EA, Sega, Konami, 2K, Namco Bandai, Rockstar and Activision have known about the console since the end of 2009.
  • The online will be improved substantially.
  • In terms of design it will look like a modern day SNES.

I for one am looking forward to E3 this year. With this, the NGP and all the new games its going to be great!

I guess it's a risky move. necessary but risky.

The overall economic situation ain't that pretty and a 5 year cycle is way too early these days having ps3 and xbox360 alive and kicking with 2011 as one of the most promising gaming years in history (batman2, uncharted3, gow3 etc etc)

Not sure the casual Buyer (mostly parents with kids) will fall for a new wii console.

True.

Now with Kinect and Move selling reasonably well you could say we already have alternatives to an HD Wii, with games for those consoles that appeal to all corners of the market, not just the casuals.

The original Wii was out of date almost when it was released so there was no way it would ever have the same life as the 360 and PS3. It's an interesting time for Nintendo. From what I've heard the 3DS hasn't sold particularly well .

Maybe they'll make it easier to work with to lure in 3rd party devs? Plus some cool gadgets (to be stolen later by you know who) to fiddle with or an improved pad like what Billy mentioned. Maybe a much better browser e.g. Chrome or Firefox.

Well, I'd certainly love seeing Nintendo going back to their SNES ways.

The thing that gets me is the timing. In 2,3 years (so 1 or 2 years after release) the next 360 and playstation will likely be announced. Who is going to pay the same, or slightly more for the "same" on a new Wii, when the PS4/720 is around the corner. They have to do something, but it seems like a stopgap to me.

After getting the Wii (quite a while after release, and because the gf wanted it) I'm really sceptical about buying any Nintendo stuff. I got bored within a couple of days with the Wii, and there hasn't really been much released that would interest me back.

That's my thinking too. If the Wii 2 is slightly better than the 360, well I may as well stick with my 360 & PS3. Only 'slightly better' is not enough of a reason to buy a console, especially in these tough times.

My guess is the Wii 2 will have a new killer gimmick, one that will impress all the family at Christmas and have them running out to buy it (even my grandad has a Wii). They'll look to keep their current user-base I think, as it's served them well, rather than go after the hardcore market.

The problem though is that it hasn't served them that well in fact. Yes the sales were good at the beginning, but 3rd party developers were dropping like flies and as a result sales are dropping and this has now forced their hand early on.

They need to look at past consoles and learn from there. The DS is a good combination of both casual and hardcore titles. They need to apply the same with Project Cafe but focus even more on the hardcore this time around by tempting these all important 3rd party developers like Bethesda, Rockstar, 2K, Valve etc.

Also they really need to aim their new console to be considerably more powerful than either the PS3 or 360 as this is over 5 year old tech. Just making it slightly more powerful than a 360 (let alone a PS3) is just repeating the same thing again just like what they did with the Wii (which was slightly more powerful than a GameCube). If they do the same silly thing again then it will be the same scenario of not enough 3rd party dev support and the ones that do join will just release quick, cheap & easy ports and shovelware.

Im hoping it will be a leap over the PS3. This isn't an unrealistic belief however I do realise that the next Xbox and PlayStation will obviously be more powerful than it.

Well, yeah, Nintendo have saturated their own market, so it's only now that their revenues have taken a hit.. However they sold the Wii at a profit right from the get go, and it was their intention to make money on console sales. They didn't ever sell at a loss like MS and Sony. Only now is MS in the black with the 360, and Sony are still making dreadful losses on the PS3.

MS and Sony never intended to make money on the actual hardware, they do much better through software sales (and online revenues through Live and PSN, and DLC), giving them a much more reliable revenue stream. The Wii has fallen flat on it's face in this respect, and shot it's load so to speak in the first few years when demand for consoles was ridiculously high (and made artificially high by Nintendo). Demand for software on the Wii has never been high, though. Hopefully Nintendo now realise they cannot afford to ignore the hardcore. These are the people that buy games every month, not just stick with Wii Sports which came with the console.

Anyway, the real star for Nintendo has been the DS. That's the real money-maker for them.

The thing is though that it might be only slightly better in terms of power but you can pretty much guarantee it's not going to be anything like those consoles. For better or worse it'll do something completely different and i am glad because i don't want another ps360, those two consoles are practically the same. It's basically like having one console at times, just two different versions. I doubt that it's going to go toe-to-toe with those consoles, i just don't see the point.

If it's like the Game Cube then i am interested. The third party support, as well as first party titles, made that a pretty unique system.
