It's official - Northern Ireland are the best team in the world!

http://www.fifaworldrankings.egowar.com/per_capita.htm

well, maybe not 'official' but it's still good to wind up the english!

...and the yanks! :lmao:

Given it is of no meaning, how does it wind anyone up?

I mean it shows that Northern Ireland have done good with limited resources..good stuff. But the name of the game is winning irrespective of resources so?

So surely you can only be happy with either getting to a major competiotn, a good run in a major competition or winning a major competiton...

i thought england had ALWAYS been the best team in the world

How old is that attack my word.

Yes lets all pretend that th English are arrogant.....maybe while we're at it all the spanish can be waiters and all the scots hard as nails etc etc ](*,)

and in the end turn out to be Germans playing to be from Barcelona and to know nothing...

I know crazy hey.

Hey Coopz,

The point I was making is that comments like "I thought that England always had the best team" have been done to death. I mean it has almost become a pre-requisite for many people to slag off England and to play the stereotype "we are all arrogant" tag or such like.

I honestly do not think it is acceptable anymore and I've had enough of it.

There is no more truth in that tag or anymore reason Enlgand should be slagged off for a supposed attitude than it is for any other country to be slagged off.

I would not think it would be acceptable to insinuate stereotypes/negative connotations to people from Italy, France, German, Brazil, Spain etc I don't think that kind of behavior is acceptable to anyone from any country and I do not think English people should have to tolerate it anymore than anyone else should.

I notice that other countries can mention their teams without being constantly sniped at, slated, generally critisized by the use of dogma and stereotypes....everyone that is but the English.

People should be standing up to this sort of thing and no longer accepting it.

Me and MJ know each other so its a bit of banter thats all

Looking from the outside in i can see how you dont like what he said but it was intended as a joke

How many of those Northern Ireland players were actually born there?

According to the IFA website, every player except maik taylor was born here that was in the last squad.

Jimmy Quinn's the only one i can remember in recent months to play for N.I But born in England;) and he ain't played for us in donkeys.

Ok that is fair enough and I'll take it that he intended no ill.

Still I think the problem is that with so many people willing to joke when it is England, far more so than any other team, in a way that it is sailing close to the wind whatever the intention...it does put such people in the Bernard Manning position even if they don't intend that.

Certainly there factually are too many comments of this nature for everyone to be just joking. I would suggest that the majority of such quotes do stem from some negative under current and I am quite sick of it.

So yea, sorry to the guy if he was just trying to engage in banter and meant no ill will...but people I would suggest have to think a little bit more about how all this comes across.

Afterall, I do not see such jokes at the expense of Italians talking about the Italian team, or Germans talking about the German team etc etc.....and we wouldn't expect to see jokes about black people or Jewish people time after time after time...

Maybe people think I am making a meal of this, but I have just had enough of being pounded for nothing other than my place of birth. I want to be able to support the team without often feeling that the world is against the English/me due to history that I have no control of or some misconceeived stereotype that I don't conform to...

thanks daz!

vanzandt, i love to see england to well, and that is true. i've even got the home top and a couple of training tops.

if you ever go to northern ireland during a major championship, i'll think you'd get your eyes opened. there are union jacks up on walls and hanging from the ceilings in most of the bars (certainly in all the bars i go to) and 99% of northern irish people are cheering on england and most people are wearing england tops - much of this has to do with the fact that we are loyal to the queen and unfortunately, NI have failed to qualify for a major tournament since mexico 86. ultimately, we support northern ireland AND england.

but i still stick by the opinion that a fair few people in the england team are more concerned about how they look than how they play...

edit: i must add, that i am talking about the england football team here, and NOT YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL, so please don't misinterpret my comments towards the english football team as being towards you, which going by your posts, you seem to have taken my remarks personally and with an almost racist leaning...

mate, WOOOAH! calm down! nobody is attacking you.

you're beginning to make me think that you ARE the england team, going under the name vanzandt...

thanks daz!

I am simply saying therefore do not sail so close to the wind and make comments that can be easily misinterpreted and be misclassified along with those that are often made by the ignorant who hold prejudicial views.

I’m not interested in hearing excuses from you I would just like it if people didn’t always cast slurs whether joking or not, I do not want to deal with the undercurrent of prejudice and I do not want to hear attempts to explain it away. If you are not a person with any prejudice simply do not make comments that are so easily interpreted as such.

With regards to Northern Irleand, I have lived in Northern Irleand mate. I lived there for a number of years (I lived in Ballywlater and my dad is from Northern Ireland) so you don’t need to tell me the situation..

but i still stick by the opinion that a fair few people in the england team are more concerned about how they look than how they play...

That is your opinion and I do not agree with it, though you are entitled to it. My problem is not with mere opinion, rather it is what comes across as prejudice. A long time ago black people in England were told they were being overly sensitive If their happened to be a lot of black jokes or comments at their expense. No doubt some of the people indulging in such did so because it was seen as acceptable and part of the culture….that of course did not make it right. I often see England in a similar vain when it comes to world football and football forums. It has for whatever reason become acceptable to make such jokes and comments about England or the English or the England team and very rarely does anyone complain about it. I am saying that it whole unacceptable and wrong.

If you do not want to be tarred with the brush of being prejudicial then do not sail so close to the wind and do not join in with crowd in what has been previously seen as acceptable. It is no more acceptable than Bernand Manning saying it is just a bit of banter or I tell kokes about all kinds of people etc.

Even Coopz said that he can see how I could see your comments….that it took someone to know you to know you did not intend any harm. That means that people who do not know you can easily arrive t the conclusion I have….and frankly I would just prefer not to have to hear these type of comments irrespective of supposed intention.

edit: i must add, that i am talking about the england football team here, and NOT YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL, so please don't misinterpret my comments towards the english football team as being towards you, which going by your posts, you seem to have taken my remarks personally and with an almost racist leaning...

No that is not aan acceptable explanation. If you say something that slurs my country and all the connotations that come with that, make stereotypical derogatory remarks about the English etc then you are casting a slur on me as I am English. I see it very much a personal thing. If you make similar stereotypical derogatory comments towards Italians, Mulsims, Black people etc then people from the those backgrounds will often take offence just as I have.

You cannot slag off a person’s country jokingly or not without some of that rubbing off on the individual and making them feel bad about it.

Just seriously stop trying to explain away the behavior. If you meant no harm or ill intention then we just leave it there and I’ll accept that and in future just think about how these things are and don’t make comments that sail so close to the wind and can be misinterpreted….please.

wtf are you talking about mate!?!?! you must be a fragile little boy...

what have i said that slurs your country or the english people/nation??? go on, gimme just one example of something i said...

as far as the ENGLAND FOOTBALL TEAM is concerned, they are ripe for criticism, regardless of whether that criticism comes from an englishman or otherwise, and it's completely ludicrous to construe this criticism as racist or derogatory towards an english citizen! don't take it to heart, mate!

the reason they are ripe for criticism are: england have consistantly under-achieved since italia 90. unbelievably, they didn't even qualify for euro 92 or even more incredibly, they failed to qualify for usa 94! maybe euro 96 is the odd exception to this when they were a toe-length away from winning the tournament, but generally speaking they haven't lived up to the expectations of a nation.

considering, on paper, they should at least be reaching the semi-finals in every tournament they play in - the sheer fact that they don't means that somebody, somewhere, within the ENGLAND FOOTBALL TEAM isn't doing their job correctly - i need look no further than people like rio ferdinand and ashley cole. and before you think i'm singling those two out because of the colour of their skin, i'm not.

Don't you think players become arrogant when they are constantly picked whether they deserve it or not? I blame the management for that. You could argue that a team playing together constantly will grow together, but it just hasn't happened over the last few years. We are not a skillful team and we should try to harness our greatest traits which have always been passion and work rate. The smug players need to be made to fight for their places.
The recent injuries might be the best thing that's happened for years as we are now getting proof that you don't have to be a top 4 player to play for England.
