How to push players forward?

Sorry, have tried searches, but possibly wording it wrong.

Can someone tell me how I adjust the forward and back arrows to push my players attacking or defensive.

I've looked through manual and can't see.

It's doing my head in.

When altering your formation, on the screen where you alter player positions, press L1/R1 to cycle through the different options.
