How to get good at PES 6?

I've tried searching for tutorials on YouTube/Reddit, but I found almost nothing.

I really want to get good at the game, because I know from playing it that it's a great game and I would enjoy it much more if I was good at it. But sadly I can barely win most games with equal-ish teams on the Regular difficulty. I know PES 6 is supposed to be a very hard game but I don't feel like I'm necessarily improving at the game as I'm playing it, unlike other PES games.

I normally struggle with shooting a lot. I know, it's the most common complaint with the game. It's extremely sensitive and error-prone so I try not to shoot unless I'm absolutely sure I have a very good chance at scoring, but that means I only manage to get a shot on goal maybe 2-3 times a game. Sometimes when I'm in a very good position with a player with good shooting stats, the ball just flies into row Z even though I lightly tapped the ball.

Sometimes it's also really hard for me to aim my through balls correctly. I'm not sure if my controller isn't particularly compatible with the game or what but sometimes I pass in the exact opposite of the direction where I aimed.

If it would help, I can record a game of me playing against the AI and upload it here.

Have a good day. Incidentally, if it matters I'm playing on the Gladiator patch with no DLCs.

You need to feel the game with your fingertips. It's a special feeling, and practice can make a difference. That special feeling arises even when you fail to score in almost every possible opportunity or the ball goes very close to the crossbar when it should have been in the gates.

It's been a long time since I played the game but from memory:

  • Stop sprinting so much
  • Utilise formations and individual player instructions, adapt to other team's strength/players/formations
    • Good example here is with makele type players, set their attacking patterns (can't remember what it was called) only horizontally and they'll remain in that DM position, covering space
    • Man mark danger players with players who negate their strengths (be it pace, tackling ability, strength, arial ability etc)
  • Stats do genuinely matter, utilise them. Good tacklers have better tackle success, better passers will weight passes better etc. If you're looking to play players through, try and do it through your best passer. If you have a good crosser and a good striker good in the air, utilise it.
  • Be patient and work your attacks/progression
  • Get comfortable with R2 dribbling and super cancel
  • SHOT FAKES!
The older PES games always rewarded having a good idea about football and individual players. I play football games to this day like I'm controlling their real life counterparts almost solely because of old PES games (that, and I like the game to reflect reality). But on old PES' if you had a good dribbler, you would always try and dribble with them because it was such a benefit, same with passing, shooting etc. It also made moments where unexpected outcomes from other players happened so special. Like a weak foot 25 yard desperation screamer from a defender or something.

Ugh, if only these feelings could be replicated now.

I used to spend so much time in the Training section of the old ISS/PES games that I think I like it even more than the matches themselves.

There, you can set to play against only a goalkeeper or add “participation” in the formation settings menu for the opponent, which is just the reserves of your team. I played a lot of 11 v 7 or 11 v 1 just to get a feel for the ball and situations.

But by far the best thing for me is using the <select> button and setting a lower time amount so I can replay the same situation over and over again — you can figure out which works best for you, but 30-40 is a good place to start. You can find this in the training settings. That chance you ballooned over the bar? Re-play it in an instance and try to figure out the right pressure to put on the shoot button. Lose possession after a good move? Go back and try again from the same point.

In some situations it is preferable to have a controlled shot. If you hold R2 whilst shooting you will find that it will stop you blasting over the bar with moderate power.
However the height of a shot isn't determined by just the power gage alone, it's also dependent on how long you hold the direction and in what direction. Most people play with analog stick these days but I find it to be nowhere near as precise as D-pad for the older PES games like PES 6. You'll also find that shooting improves just by switching to using D-pad. However, if you're going to do this then using the never ending recommendation of an Xbox controller won't cut it. Although that controller is expertly suited for analog control of most games, it fails miserably in the D-pad category. I recommend a DS4 as it has a superior D-pad or even something like a retrobit or 8bitdo have better D-pad than the Xbox controller.
Anyway if you want to stick to analog control then you'll find R2 will help you a lot.

How to get good? Practice. There's a training mode, use that.

Personally, I get tired of people always looking for 'the meta', or the secret hints or tricks to be the best. What happened to just playing the game? Enjoying the game? I saw on a Fifa-related FB page, something like "the meta corner technique", and I had to comment, "Or you can, you know, just play football". That is a big factor why modern games are going downhill. They aren't designed to be fully played anymore. Because the audience don't want to fully play anymore.

Mini-rant over. Sometimes I destroy the AI, sometimes they destroy me. It's a football game at the end of the day

If you had read my post beyond just the title, you'd have known that the reason I made that post was because I didn't think I got better at the game as I played it more and more, unlike other games where I could feel myself gradually improving as I kept playing the game.

Personally, I get tired of people not reading the post to which they are replying, sometimes with a long rant that has nothing to do with the post at all.

No, where can I find it?

https://www.mediafire.com/file/zuspmahjl9xjmsu/Guia+PES+2009.rar/file

Parts you should check in this guides.

But also, players' abilities (I found the PES 2009 explained it a little bit better, use chat gpt to translate to english). Take your time to read the guides.
- Dribbling, feints and passing (short - longs) and its related player abilities to perform it well (I would say you need at least 85 at each of required abilities/ 90 at one of it). The related stats are mentionned in PES6 - 2008 guides. So what your player can do, what he can't (unless his arrow condition is high)

- PES 6 "Superstars" section (p.104) : you will get an idea about the players' category depending on their abilities.
- Teams guide (p.106); it contains comment on how to take advantage of your players abilities, tactically.

The game is varied. Some matches in Top Player I find too easy. Others are really difficult. There's no science to being better. Just enjoy the fact it isn't easy. All my points still apply. It's an old game. Practice it. Learn how to defend, learn how to shoot, feel how it should work. Teams practice on the training pitch to apply it to the match

THIS!!! I spent hours doing the time rewind in Training

I had that official guide, hard copy. Was it pes 6 that had the hidden chip shot in the guide? If you turned 45 degrees just inside your own half and fully power an L1 chip shot it would go in every time 😂 not sure if it was pes 5 or 6 guide it was in though.

I think it also mentioned tapping triangle when the opponent shoots at the perfect time to increase chances of a save. I still do it to this day.

No, and I would say that's a myth that doesn't exist
Must've been something discussed on this forum then because it's something I learnt back then and have done ever since.

The chip shot cheese was 100% in one of the guides.

What about formation/strategy? When I played PES6, I usually used formation 3-6-1 with back line/offside trap "B". As far as I remember, this is the best working formation to restrain the CPU in its half of the field.

as I learned in the piggy back guide, set the DMF's attacking directions as horizontal and he'll just patrol that midfield area. Those guides were so good man.

Personally, I didn't like the arrows. Without them, there was some unpredictability in behavior, especially from CMF, AMF

The Winning Eleven 9 Strategic guide explained in more detailed way the arrows effects by making tests

This was my go to formation on various versions of PES up to about 2009 but I played dual CM and had each player, including the defence on normal attack defence which means the team would operate as a single unit. Of course you need the right players to make it work (not meaning a team full of superstars)
