Inspired by Plan M 's fantastic thread about goalkeeping erros, i wanted to start a thread about great goalkeepers present and past. Not "the best keeper ever" (that's me...:-pp...joking), but who do you like...it's all about style and his very subjective.

My favourites:

1. Nevil Southall: great positioning, the one i liked most.
2. Peter Schmeichel: Man Utd owe him soo much...
3. Christian Piot and Michel Preudhomme: in Belgium we used to have great gk's, these are the two best IMHO, both came from Standard.
4. Vander Sar: i always liked him
5. Gordon Banks: THAT save and he was great
6. Rinat Dassaiev: at the time "our" Pfaff clamed to be the best, he was wrong, this guy and Southall were better.
7. Dino Zoff: one of many great Italian goalkeepers.
8. Tomasjewski: the man who eliminated England from the 1974 WC
9 Fillol: great Argentinian goal keeper.
10. The Foster guy who played for Watford last season and now for Man Utd: i like him a lot.
11. Greene (not sure about his name, sorry Steevio), West Ham's GK: he's a good one.

...

Always liked this guy, more for his free kicks than anything else

And one of my favorite keepers these days, Carlos Kameni. Love Pepe Reina, he makes the odd mistake, but his shot blocking is world class. Great at sweeping, and distribution from the back is top quality. Very unique keeper, love him.

And not to forget the legend that is Buffon!

Gigi Buffon, hes a nice guy off the pitch as well and is consistent. Sebastiano Rossi for second, because hes got character! Marco Storari and Jimmy Fontana tied third. They both make the nicest hollywood saves. The former is a barbarian and the latter is 42.

Buffon, best by far (should be Ballon d'or 2006), but actually in France we are really lucky with a new generation of goalkeepers with Mandanda (OM) and Lloris (Nice)

Oliver Kahn - Best ever and could still go on for at least another two years. Plays a brilliant season so far, though our defence sure deserves a mention there as well. :)

Andy Kopke - The blueprint of the ideal professional with amazing talent.

Frank Rost - Best proof how many amazing goalies Germany had and has at the same time, since this flawless rock of a man never made it to the biggest stages with the national team

Rene Adler - Next Kahn/Kopke/Rost/Maier/Ilgner/Schumacher/Stein in the making.

Tim Wiese - model athlete, but too many blunders currently.

José Luis Chilavert - What a guy. A myth in Paraguay with a bad temper but amazing skills both in the goal and at set pieces. Paraguay vs. Germany in 2002 was the show-off between two titans in the goal. It was like watching a wrestling match rooting for your favorite superstar with all the other player just bystanders. I remember how I wished for free-kicks from a near distance so that Oli could show Chilavert who the man is, at the same time being scared that he might put one past him! :P

Francesco Toldo - For a long time an equal contender for the number one spot in the Italian goal, showing just how much talent this country has on this position as well.
My favorite Italian goalie.

Rene Higuita - I think everybody knows this guy. Though he wasn't known for much more than his creative saves and horrid blunders, he deserves at least a mention.

Jorge Campos - A very little guy, yet a real decent goalie. THOSE JERSEYS!!! Was both goalie and striker during his career, right?

Another problem with Wiese... he always looks gay in the Werder GK kit! :D

Iker Casillas - Just remember some Real Madrid games this season to see his class. Madrid fans call him San Casillas.

Gigi Buffon - Meraviglioso portiere.

Rogério Ceni - The heart of São Paulo. Absolutely fantastic in free kicks.

Ricardo - The english nightmare. What else?

Michel Preudhomme - Me, as a Benfica fan, should mention this brilliant keeper. Just pure class at Estádio da Luz.

neville southall was the worlds best in his time...

As a big Everton fan you're obviously biased, but he's my all-time favourite goal keeper.

No big surprises in the lists so far.
When reading them i realised that i forgot to mention Peter Cech and Francesco Toldo...i prefer the both of them to Buffon...but i agree that Buffon is one of the best ever...

I also see the obvious show-goalkeepers like Higuita, Campos, the guy from Paraguay (sorry but i forgot his name) and Ceni...these are not my type of goal keepers..as a former goal keeper i would even say that they are rather bad examples...but like i said this is all very subjective...

To me a goal keeper who often makes spectacular saves is not necessarily a very good goal keeper. Lots of people over here claim that Jean-Marie Pfaff used to be the best goalkeeper in the world...i never agreed with that, to me he wasn't even among the top three in Belgium (this at the time when Belgium had fantastic goalkeepers: Preudhomme, Bodart, Munaron, Vande Walle, Custers all of them would easily play in the national team today...).

I add one (i beat biased) but Barthez it's maybe the best goalkeeper on 1 vs 1 and with the feet, both rare quality for a goalkeeper.

I think the most complete goalkeeper was Peter Schmeichel at his prime. He has everything a top goalkeeper should have.

A huge frame,(jersey size XXXL),huge kicks with either legs, those signature long throws of his, great reflexes and shotstopping.

He is always keeping his defenders on their toes, barking at them all the time.He is also known to have this mentality that if he has to make a save,it means that his defence are not doing their job well, hence, his right to have a go at them! He also once stated that he hates it if he has to save the ball!

But the most unique technique that Big Pete has was his rushing out,one-on-one saves. His experience in playing handball really played a big part in this.He just murders anyone who dares to go in one on one with him!

Peter Schmeichel.Goalkeeping God.End of.

I add one (i beat biased) but Barthez it's maybe the best goalkeeper on 1 vs 1 and with the feet, both rare quality for a goalkeeper.

LOL....we have 50 goalkeepers like that in Belgium at least, poor Thomas soooo chauvinist...
