Played a match on the demo, players look really alike but sadly it has an arcadey feel to it and it's really disapointing.

Shock horror, EA Sports screw up yet another title.

I'll stick to Tennis Elbow 2011 :).

How come EA can also use those players when Topspin 4 had them to ? No restrictions I guess in Tennis in that regard huh ?
I guess the licenses aren't exclusive for these players, although there were most likely some that EA tried to include but couldn't.

For example, in PES and FIFA, both have La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1 licensed simultaneously, whilst EA have the Premier League, Bundesliga etc. exclusively.

The roster in this game is nowhere near good enough though imo.

Been playing the demo quite a bit, This is better than Top Spin 4 for me mainly because it's alot less predictable and on the hardest mode it's a real challenge while TS was far to easy.

Graphics are good infact the best yet for a tennis game, Sound is good and again i'd say the best yet, Ball physics are better than TS for the most part however they seem a bit odd at times hopefully sorted intime for final release.

Final game should be very good and finally we have another Tennis game, Hopefully this will wake 2k up a bit.

I can't get my head around this game at all...

As a simulation, it's pathetic.
As an arcade game it's boring.

Virtua Tennis nails the arcadey all-action take on tennis, and Tennis Elbow nails the simulation side.

This and Top Spin to me are kind of psuedo-sims that are masters of none, in No Man's Land when it comes to gameplay...

Agree about Topspin...it is like PES & Fifa they all claim to be sims but are so far away!

However no idea how you can think this game is pathetic and boring, How much time have you put into the demo to come to that conclusion??? I reckon on Superstar difficulty it plays more realistic than TS does and plays better also and is far superior to Virtua Tennis.

Neverheard of that Tennis Elbow but checked YT and it looks good bar the really horrible graphics and running animations but it seems to suffer in the same way TS suffers and thats lack of swerve on the ball every shot seems to be straight as a dye and it's one area where the demo of Grand Slam Tennis shined.
It's not an abysmal video game, it's just nothing like tennis and not very entertaining to me...

Personally, when you're so far away from realism, you have to either go all-out arcade to make something so ridiculous that it can be a light-hearted bit of fun - e.g. Virtua Tennis, Everybody's Golf, NBA Jam, Wii Sports, Mario Kart etc.
Or, use artistic license to make compromises that balance the game in such a way that it still stays somewhat true to the tactical/thinking side of what they represent but exaggerated in some aspects to make it more action-packed/entertaining - e.g. classic PES, Football Manager, Skate (an EA game I like!), PGR.

I can't stand these games that take themselves too seriously, pretending to be something they're not - FIFA, Fight Night, this... pretty much all EA Sports titles, Top Spin, Tiger Woods, Ashes/International Cricket 09/10 etc.

That Tennis Elbow game is a solid similation of tennis - on the hardest settings with low autopositioning and no ball preview, you have to rely heavily on having a realistic gameplan/playing style (which will vary depending on the surface) as well as needing very good decision making and control over your player... None of the mainstream tennis games offer this - it's true the graphics/animations are nowhere near what you'd expect these days, but the gameplay is leaps and bounds ahead.
There's 60 difficulty levels, ranging from super-easy to pretty much impossible, so there's no problem when it comes to finding a challenge, plus a very in-depth single player World Tour mode and online play.

And although you're right in that the regular top spin/flat shots don't swerve in Tennis Elbow, the slices do have a nice trajectory to them, and (although difficult to perfect) you can hit a swerving top spin shot which can be useful at times.

We must be playing a very different demo.

I do see what your saying about the rest of your points and if only PES would go back to it's all out action as you say it's clearly failed as a sim. :(
The developer releases updates with added features quite regularly rather than having yearly editions as such, although the major updates come with a new name and a price tag - there was a 2009 version and a 2011 version.
If you owned the 2009 version however then the upgrade was very cheap, $5 I think, rather than having to buy the whole game outright again.

Onto GST2 - It may be aesthetically pleasing, especially as a still image, but surely you can't seriously say that you think the gameplay is realistic?

YouTube - Grand Slam Tennis 2 Demo Gameplay

That won't be on Superstar difficulty (think it's Amateur), but it's still mostly the same game and it just looks ridiculous to me.

Edit - Yeah I left PES out of that list because for me, PES '11 had that old PES magic and I thoroughly enjoyed it for months, and I've hardly played '12.

Im starting to get the impression you've not even played the demo?

The video is not realistic, play the game properly then yes i'd say it looks and moves more realistically more than other Tennis games on consoles, but again it's easy to draw comparisons to Fifa and PES....play them realistically and you do have at times two games that can look very realistic however most people dont so it's easy to show off both games which dont resemble the real thing at all. Shame i dont have a capture card as i've had some really good points in Grand Slam Tennis that have been extremely realistic.....So you've not played it?

Had a good few games of Tennis Elbow, it was decent enough and i can see why you think it might be an all and out sim but for me it's lacking so much in the visual department and sound department that it doesnt look, move or sound like real tennis does and this day and age that's got to be important. Also it's programmed to such a basic level that it's like going back to the simple gameplay of the Amiga days which is not good.

On console's maybe a Hybrid of TS, GST2 & Elbow is the answer, I dont think many people would buy Tennis Elbow if it was out on PS3/360 even if it was a £12 Arcade/PSN game i think it would struggle.

I've played it, did what you did and put it on a USB as I don't have Xbox Live at the minute anyway.

Admittedly not extensively as I've been quite busy, but I didn't need to for the flaws to become apparent - maybe it's just having come from playing Tennis Elbow, but the gameplay sticks out like a sore thumb and it's almost cringeworthy...
Even the way it works is so basic, 99% of shots go in, the physics are strange, the players court coverage/inertia is all wrong... There's just so much that's nowhere near realistic. I could sum up in more depth after more play time but I hardly feel the urge to bother with it again to be honest.

Having watched and played (on and off) tennis for years, this game doesn't capture the sport at all for me, yeah it looks pretty and has decent sound effects etc. but when it comes down to the tactical side of the game, it's non-existant. It's just repetitive neither-arcade-nor-sim tennis, eurgh.

I can see why you can't enjoy Tennis Elbow though, I'm glad I can see past the visuals/sfx - they are the last things I look for in a game... My favourite pool/snooker game is Virtual Pool 3, that's even more ugly than TE2011 :P.

Edit - Yup, TE is programmed in a "basic" way and it's all very rigid and almost mathematical, but that still allows far more variation in the shots (plenty of unforced errors on elite controls/low autopositioning), much greater tactical depth, more gameplay depth (i.e. precise footwork is needed with low autopositioning, if you let the ball land at your feet, you'll most likely screw up the shot), more realistic momentum etc. and the match stats seem to replicate those of a real tennis match much more accurately than the mainstream games programmed with more complexity.

Re: the video, you're right, it's not that relevant I suppose - it does show others what the game looks like in motion as there hadn't been one since the vid posted by ThomasGOAL earlier in the thread.
I tried to find one on a higher difficulty on YouTube but the search came up empty.

I don't subscribe entirely to the view that you should be able to make sports games look realistic/unrealistic by playing in different ways though - in theory, a good sports game will display realistic results to unrealistic inputs. For example, if you drive like a maniac in an F1 car in rFactor, you'll spin off and hardly be able to even complete a lap.
Same as in TE 2011, if you just run around not bothering with proper positioning/gameplan and just try belting winners on every ball (on hardest settings), you're going to be very unsuccessful, which is realistic.

The thing is with PES/FIFA, we've never had a proper football sim, and probably never will, so those games will look unrealistic in videos 99% of the time, with the odd goal/spell of play that's an exception to the rule. That Hjerpseth guy is proof really that you can play FIFA like a dick and it rewards rather than punishes you for it, PES doesn't seem to suffer to the same extent but you hardly have to be a football genius to score a shitload of goals.

Been playing more of Tennis Elbow, and i'd say its just as far as away of a sim as Top Spin/Grand Slam Tennis is...it's just they focus on different area's of the game.

However GST2 reminds me so much of PES when you see the ball physics maybe 5% of the time, your left thinking WTF just happened there it's just completely wrong!!!!!!!!!!!! They have to fix it for final release and if they dont they are going to end up with a game like PES 2008-2012 with the same questions of WHY?

when the demo for ps3 out?
On the official site it says the game will be "Available by 14/2/2012" so the demo should be on PSN/XBL shortly, EA seem to release demos quite early usually.

Sorry but that's ridiculous, and very wrong. Almost like saying GRID is just as realistic as rFactor, or NBA Live is just as realistic as NBA 2K and so on... I'd be repeating myself if I explained why so I won't bother doing so.

i tried the demo last nite, i was really amused about how shitty this game is. how can they possibly release such puking garbage is beyond my understanding.

worst sport game of the decade, ex aequo with rugby world cup 2011. do they really make money with these pathetic games?

You've not played this years football games have you...

I honestly don´t know why people are so surprised about the shit the game will probably be. It´s not much different from 90% of the ea sports games around. It have good graphics and animations but gameplay is repetitive, predictable, unrealistic and totally boring... Maybe only online saves, but that´s not enough for me.

Game is pure shit!
