Just wondered if anyone else had picked up a copy of this on Next-Gen ?
I'm guessing the answer would probably be no for the most part, bearing in mind the genre is awash with such state-of-the-art classics, such as COD and BF3 et al.
I'll be honest, I'm not a FPS fan, I dont like COD and I couldnt be bothered getting into the BF series. I did enjoy Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and 2, mainly because if felt more sim-like. It also had the Lean and Cover feature, which I love.
I saw a Goldeneye advert on PSN and flew out immediately to buy it. The reason being, Goldeneye on the N64 was hands-down, my second favourite game of all-time. No prizes for guessing the first.
Anyway, basically I fancied a trip back in time, a bit of nostalgia if you like, and boy did I get it. Although the levels are different from the N64 version, there are a hell of alot of familiar memories that certainly take you back. After I'd got over the fact Brosnan had been replaced by Craig, I set to work on the first mission on Single Player. The Dam, oh joy. The graphics I find pretty good, not great, just pretty good. Certainly not a patch on COD or BF3, but I'm not a graphics whore, and gameplay is where I get my kicks. And although I'm not a FPS fan as such, there is something very engaging and cool about being Bond. And that beats COD and BF3 all day for me personally.
The game is also very linear in design, but again, I like that. For some reason, I'm shit with big maps, and always lose my bearings. There is nothing I hate more the walking around lost, trying to figure out where the fuck I am. Thankfully, I dont get this with Goldeneye. I also started out on the hardest difficulty level, which is 007. The reason for that is, it's the same system as the N64 version. Which means health doesnt regenerate. I love that, it makes the whole stealth style of play so much more relative. The A.i isnt great, even on 007 level, but it's more than enough for me. After all, this isnt Rainbow Six with highly-trained terrorists, these are Bond baddies, which comes ten-a-penny. Cannon-fodder if you like. I think the best part of the Single Player Campaign, is the fact you can go in all-guns-blazing, or, in total stealth mode, which is what personally floats my boat. There is nothing like taking out a level, with your Silenced P99, without anyone knowing you were even there. It's not Splinter Cell stealth, but there are plenty of opportunities to utilise this tactic, and with a Cover System, it doesnt get much better for me personally.
I finally finished the first level last night, after a couple of hours play, and loved it. The way the level ends was very Bond, but I wont spoil any suprise, it just made me smile.
The second level of which I've just started, is the one, for anyone that's played the original classic, where you drop down the from the air ventilation shafts, to the guard taking a dump in one of the toilets. Jeez did that make me smile.
I generally dont play any game bar PES and some UFC from time to time. But this will certainly hold my attention, and due to the fact I'm pretty shit at these type of games, will probably take me a while to complete.
As well as the Single Player Campaign, there are also MI6 Missions that look pretty good. But, hands-down, the most fun is be had in the classic 4-Player Offline matches. I host our Weekly Lads Night, and we had a blast on this last week. It's been the same mates for years, so we all played this together on the N64 way back when. Playing matches like Golden Gun with Oddjob and Co brought all the great memories flooding back. An absolute scream offline if you have your mates over. I've not ventured Online, but this game certainly isnt about that. It's about the nostalgia trip of the Campaign, and also the offline Multi-Player.
Superb, very happy with it. You just cant beat being Bond.
