after having a discussion with a cousin (of whom i doubt his sexuality not just because he won't like football..), i was just wondering..
are there any known gay footballers?

Not that it's any of our business or it should be used to judge them in any negative light but I have wondered about the same thing before.

Given so many professional footballers and the supposed ratio of homosexuals in men which is a lot higher than I thought (some say 1 out of 10!) , there must be a LOT of gay footballers we don't know about. Of course I don't blame them if they don't want that out in the public as it wouldn't help them exactly in most cases.

I've heard all kinds of rumours though. Some people said Sol Campbell is gay! I know he used to have a wife though...

Justin Fashanu came out in the early 90's, he proceeded to kill himself.

I don't think it'll ever be truly accepted, but really, does it make any difference whatsoever to how people play football? Noone should give a fuck how footballers, or anyone in general spend their time out of their job.

Mind you, if Messi came out as gay, you'd probably have everyone trying to say they're gay and imitate him because he's so good at football.

No it shouldn't matter at all. And I agree with you. Sadly, I don't think it'll ever be accepted in a sport like this especially. :/

People who weren't even gay got a lot of stick for being suspected of it. Remember Graeme Le Saux? Imagine if you actually ARE gay and you see players being ostracized like that! You'd NEVER come out!

Anyway, it shouldn't matter, but one can't help but wonder. I don't know about others, but I personally am genuinely curious. I mean of ALL these players, some MUST be gay. Well who are they? Surely not ALL of them are straight!

:P

Messi isn't gay though. Seen him and his girlfriend.

Was just looking on the net for this and found a couple articles:

1. Mario Gomez urging Gay footballers to 'come out'.

http://www.thelocal.de/sport/20101110-31097.html

Unfortunately, the pressure WOULD be insane I think! They would feel it from EVERYwhere probably. Their team-mates who'd shower with them / be in locker room, their coach, the fans, taunts of opposition players/fans....

2. Homosexuality in English football - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia@@AMEPARAM@@/wiki/File:Luiz_Felipe_Scolari.jpeg" class="image"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/58/Luiz_Felipe_Scolari.jpeg/150px-Luiz_Felipe_Scolari.jpeg"@@AMEPARAM@@commons/thumb/5/58/Luiz_Felipe_Scolari.jpeg/150px-Luiz_Felipe_Scolari.jpeg

In short, while I'd love to know who they are as simple statistics tell us there must be at least a dozen or so players in Bundesliga, EPL, Serie A, etc. I can UNDERSTAND why for many reasons, they wouldn't come out publicly. It'd make life a lot harder for them unnecessarily unfortunately due to the societies we still live in today.

Pique is dating Shakira right now. I doubt he's gay lol.

And Zlatan, I hate that prick but to be honest, I expect him to be the LAST guy to be gay. In fact, he's probably the homophobic type!

This Anton guy is a player in the top Swedish division ?

Expecting to be.. played youth national u-17

Francisco Jiménez Tejada he is knowed like Xisco and he is big Gay and momentaly he play for Deportivo de La Coruña

Wow Xisco is gay then? And Openly gay that everybody knows about? I never knew that! Thanks for the post.

And so there's at least ONE professional top level footballer who's out of the closet. There's bound to be SO many more!

That article says it all that I posted above. In top 4 divisions of England with all those teams and each squad of 25 players, not a SINGLE player is apparently a homosexual. :-s

Simple statistics tell you that can't be.

I remember Le Saux versus Robbie Fowler and how that all boiled over, that was all 'cause Le Saux enjoyed reading and going to plays and stuff like that, completely different to other footballers at the time who basically went to the pub when they weren't on the pitch.

I also remember an article around the time of the World Cup last summer suggesting at least some of the German team are indeed gay, obviously none have come out but with Gomez urging them to maybe they've spoken in private?

:P

Elton John had a wife remember :P

Remember in the papers all that stuff with

Ashley Cole
Jeermain Jenas
SOl Campbell?

And other players.

Meant to put mobile phone in their bum etc..and take pics/vids of doing gay acts.

I dont remember it all

Jermain Jenas and Sol Campbell are two I could see being gay. Ca$ley, I very much doubt. Glenn Johnson could be another I think.

Paulo Ferreira and C. Ronaldo may not be bad guesses either.

Yeah that's what I was gonna say too. With Mario Gomez saying what he did, it becomes very obvious that there are gay players in German National team. Some of his friends. Now who they are, that will always perhaps remain a secret. Does make you curious tho! Mesut Ozil anyone?

Elton John had a wife remember :P

Lol true.

------------

@KICK OFF, you're just guessing right? Because I don't think any of those players have come out with anything unlike Xisco apparently.

Milan Baros and Guti wouldn't surprise me at all!

I had my doubts about Gutti...not that it matter of course...

On second thoughts it does matter in a way. If a football star would out himself, that would be something huge...
I also still remember all the fuss about poor Graeme Le Saux just because he liked reading and art...that says a lot about the other professional football player. I would like to read his autobiography.

Another: do you guys have many gay colleagues at work. I have two lesbian colleagues and at two homosexual colleagues who have outed themselves and never had the least trouble...

I thought guti likes transvestites?

I agree that assuming the homosexuality publicly might do more harm than good to the individual, on the other hand a 'mass outing' campaign from footballers and athletes overall could certainly help to diminish the prejudice, especially among kids who have those players as rolemodels.

kids are scared off gays.

I agree.

The only way to do this properly is to do a 'mass' outing. So the German NT players come out and say it and it's all over the media, next, Glenn Johnson :P lol (I'm just just assuming here) and rest of EPL does it, then players in France, etc.

People will courage from others and within 2 weeks, you basically have a gay parade for footballers lol.

THAT, I think could help seriously bring down prejudice and none of those players would be facing that much consequence since they're not the ONLY one as outside or in public eye/media but many others have come out.

Unfortunately I don't see that happening and I think it will severely limit their careers as well.

Because even if a certain country tolerates this more, many won't. Will all the players going for big money to Turkish teams these days for example, can you imagine one of these 'gay' players doing it now? No! Even if Fenerbahce or Galatasaray is interested now, they will simply go after another target as they won't buy that player I think.
