Forbes report: The Most Valuable Soccer Teams

what a shit? only if benfica isnt in this list? -_- i think benfica isnt so good in economical things like value of the players, own stadium, sponsoring, debits and so on. the forbes magazine do this list every year, its serious.

I know Forbes is a secure source but some time ago I saw an article saying Benfica is one of the clubs which generates more money. Believe me, Benfica is a financial machine, at least in Portugal is. Plus, some companies are trying to buy the name stadium.
The world knows Benfica logo. I think we are better known than the Hamburg, Schalke, Celtic or Aston Villa.

There you go.

That's why it makes it hard to judge some clubs, because although Benfica are absolute giants, many players would prefer to play for teams in England, Italy and Spain, because they are in a bigger league, getting paid better and getting better coverage.

Good to see we are in there, just outside the top 20 :))

I sort of agree with TSO and Steevio at the same time - This is basically a list of who has the best TV deals.

Take TV revenue out of the equation and the list would look totally different. (Maybe not the top 3 though!)

Steevio and T Butcher touched the point. TV deals make a huge difference between England, Italy and Spain and the other leagues.

Now, take a look at the richest football clubs list in 2007.

In 2007 Benfica was a "good" team, nowadays its a good team for the league they are in, but miles away of other European clubs, even small EPL clubs. Maybe in 2011 we may be in a good position again, but nowadays with the bad management we are having we won't get any better then we r now.

The potential of Liverpool is scary. You can see why Hicks is clinging on for dear life.

Honestly Parry has been running our marketing and promotional side of things for years now and its absolute shit. Once we get our act together, and get the 70k stadium built, who knows.

Highest Paid Footballers (and Guess Which MLS Star is #1?)
By: Laurie | May 2nd, 2008

ollie-kahn.jpgThe numbers are out. Guess who the #1 highest-paid footballer is? You’ll never guess.

I’ll give you a hint. Plays in MLS. Has a “pop-star” wife. Made an estimated $49 million last year, of which only $12 million came from actually playing the game. ($6.5 million of that from the LA Galaxy.)

Okay, so the fact that David Beckham makes a lot of money is no surprise. But who outside of the Bundesliga would have guessed that Bayern Munich goalkeeper Ollie Kahn (pictured) would have cracked the top twenty?

This list includes all incoming cash from things like endorsement deals, so it differs from this list, which includes only salary.

Who else made the Forbes list of highest paid footballers in the world?

As in previous years, Chelsea is well represented, with 5 players in the top twenty for a total combined salary of $78.7 million. They’re still in the running in both the EPL title race and Champions League, so maybe this is the year they’ll have something to show for the expenditure.

League total for the top twenty
English Premier League: 9
Spain La Liga: 5
Italy Serie A : 4
Bundesliga: 1
MLS: 1

Here’s the player list. (And is anybody else a little surprised by the number of over-thirty players whose real value at this point is the face/reputation and not the play?)

01. David Beckham, LA Galaxy, $48.9 million. Pitches Armani underwear AND Sharpie markers. Not sure if there’s a connection and I don’t want to think about it.

02. Ronaldinho, Barcelona, $32.6 million. Forbes mentions “Brazilian Superstar Disease” as the reason he’s gone missing in Barcelona this year. Love it.

03. Thierry Henry, Barcelona, $25.1 million. The article actually lists the Seattle Sounders as possible suitors. Seattle, we’ve reached the big time and we don’t even have a team yet.

04. Ronaldo, AC Milan, $21.2 million. The other Ronaldo. Time will tell whether The Incident will affect his endorsement value.

05. Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester United, $18.5 million. Anybody else surprised that he’s only #5? But he’s only 23. Give it some time.

06. Kaka, AC Milan, $17.7 million. If I said anything snarky about Ricky, I would probably go straight to hell. So I’m done.

07. Fabio Cannavaro, Real Madrid, $17.5 million. Includes “Sting” sunglasses contract.

08. Andriy Shevchenko, Chelsea, $17.5 million. Chelsea. Where good players go to die. On the field.

09. Steven Gerrard, Liverpool, $17.1 million. The only Liverpudlian on the list. Yes, it’s a real word. Why would you doubt me?

10. John Terry, Chelsea, $17 million. Includes “King of Shaves” endorsement, which means he’s truly arrived.

11. Wayne Rooney, Manchester United, $16.2 million. And I’m sure none of that is going to prostitutes with nicknames like “Auld Slapper” any more.

12. Francesco Totti, AS Roma, $16.2 million.

13. Michael Ballack, Chelsea, $16 million. He’s had a great turnaround this season and might even be worth it.

14. Frank Lampard, Chelsea, $14.8 million.

15. Alessandro Del Piero, Juventus, $14.3 million.

16. Didier Drogba, Chelsea, $13.4 million.

17. Rio Ferdinand, Manchester United, $12.5 million.

18. Lionel Messi, Barcelona, $11.9 million. The kid is 21. I’m not sure he even shaves yet. But this could buy a lot of razors.

19. Raul (aka Raul Gonzalez Blanco), Real Madrid $10.9 million.

20. Ollie Kahn, Bayern Munich, $10.3 million. Let’s hope he negotiated his latest contract before yesterday’s 0-4 demolition at the hands of Zenit St. Petersburg.

Anybody else finds it weird that the first 4 played shit this season. (yes incl becks) oh and receive millions of course.

Are you really sure that's what you want?

More money to bridge the gap between the Mancs, Chavs and Arsenal?

Well yes.

I'd rather we didn't have to, but we do.

it's funny to see most over rated soccer player Beckham gets that much money.

Obviously you have to compete with the likes of those teams, but don't you find yourself asking what the hell is happening with the game?

I personally would like to see the entire Premier League go bust, Sky get banned from taking TV packages, forcing more Saturday 3pm games.
Clubs getting hit hard in the pocket so having no other choice but to remove seats and let people stand for £15 a ticket.

Ahhh... am I dreaming?

I am so with you, though I'm fan of one of those teams. (That does not have any investors though and plays in a league with central tv marketing)

I'd rather be battered by Zenit every once a year than wanting the Bundesliga to follow the "English example".

But it'll happen ...

There was an article in the paper today saying Utd actually made a £50m loss in the last year.

Definately Stevio, but I don't want to sit back and see our trophy haul overtaken by Man U who were the first team to really take football in this direction.

I wish Sky would fuck off. I want salary caps etc

If there was a salary caps, the big teams would keep offering their players the maximum or near maximum, so that no one else, except foreign teams, can attract them.

It's amazing how people can write things without knowing what they're saying.. Some people people there's only EPL on the world.

Benfica was the 20th team in the world on revenue, last year. 13th placed if TV rights weren't included...(we all know how ridicously low are those compared to the big leagues, even though Benfica garantees a lot of viewers. In 2012 we'll sign a new deal).

Benfica has 14 million fans worldwide. Benfica is the team with more associated supporters in the world (170 000)...even more than Manchester United, which gave us a place on the Guiness book.

Benfica is the 5th (!) Adidas club that sales more jerseys. Now you can see how many giant teams are equipped by Adidas, and take in mind the portuguese income per capita and those other countries.

Benfica has a 65'000 stadium...and there aren't many that are 5 stars ranked by UEFA, like ours.

I could go on, and on...but you get the idea. Not only EPL teams create wealth. Benfica, with the immense number of fans that we have, are always a contender for that table.

By the way..a couple of years ago FIFA picked the 7 mythical clubs. Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Boca Juniors, Manchester United, AC Milan, Flamengo and...Benfica ;) So, a little respect!
