Load of crap as usual.

Ferdinand was immense last season - any unbiased neutral could see he was far far far better than almost anyone else in Europe let alone John Terry.

Best defender of the last season? Demichelis by FAR. But then again, it's 2008 they're taking into account, and the first half of this season was very "unlucky" for him, to say the least.

Fair enough, I didn't see enough of the Bundesliga really to judge him and Bayern weren't in the Champions League but in my view, Rio was just incredible last season. He doesn't get much credit, probably because of the problems in his past and because of his laidback style but without him I dont think United would have won the EPL and the Champions League. He had some of the best strikers in Europe in his pocket, I can't think of anyone who caused him trouble. Torres? No. Totti? No. Drogba? No. Eto'o? No. Messi? No. Like I said, just immense.

The pinnacle for me was against Roma in Italy, he was out of this world and that was just one of many games.

No disrespect to Terry but he's not as good as he was a few years ago and I'm sure there were many defenders across Europe who deserve to be ahead of him, not just Ferdinand.

But anyway these lists are stupid, nobody will agree with them and who plays upfront in that formation? Messi and Ronaldo? Or 5 attacking midfielders?;)

You'll have to take to account, though, that this list was derived from online votes, so no "judges" decided upon some weird formula this time, like IFFHS rankings. They're still pointless, you're right.
Last mentioned organization just put out a list of the "best goalkeepers of the century", only recognizing goalies from 1987 to the present ... I mean ... what the?

Quality post, A lot of people look at Ronaldo but Rio is just as important to us if not more.

Evra should also make that team. Kaka was average last season and doesnt deserve to be their.

I'd choose: Júlio César (Inter Milan); Patrice Evra (Manchester United), Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Maicon (Inter Milan); Javier Mascherano (Liverpool), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United), Lionel Messi (Barcelona); Fernando Torres (Liverpool) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter Milan).

people just vote for their favourite players, form doesnt really even come into it. plus international tournaments overshadow everything else unfortunately. i know spain won and some players had big performances but the competition was only like 3 weeks long and a handful of games. what about players that dont come from one of the big countries?

casillas

maicon vidic puyol evra

ronaldo fabgregas zanetti iniesta

del piero messi

Inner Mongolian playmaker Hun-huur-tu played a massive season and he is not in the team...how is this possibel.

My team of the year:

Van Der Sar - Brown - Vidic - Ferdinand - Evra - Carrick - Gigggs - Scholes- (even) Cristiano Ronaldo - Tevez - Rooney.

Subs: Foster - O' Shea - Hargreaves - Nani - Anderson - Saha.

The reason ???

This team won the CL and won the title in one of stongest leagues in the world...all the rest is irrelevant.

---------Casillas---------
Maicon-Ferdinand-Vidic-Evra
---Fabregas-Flamini-
Messi------------Ronaldo
-----Benzema-Torres----

Why not? He creates pace, tempos and guides the team with long/short passes, who wouldn't want a player like that?
Because I rank better other players to put in the initial eleven like Mascherano, Gerrard, Ribéry or Iniesta about 2008 (not in the same position but to complete the team).

I think Xavi has a good year, but not at that level.

wow, really, i think he is the best CM in the world

LOL I think the nominees for those lists never change. They've been the same since 2005 or something.

Jamie Carragher is by far the best defender in the Premiership. He wears his heart on his sleeve and has got the Scouse out of trouble on numerous occasions.

Who would you say is then?

The only player that I would say is better/on par with Carragher is Vidic.

Well you said 'by far the best', and I'd say he was probably somewhere in the top 5 which is quite a difference. Vidic and Ferdinand are both quite a bit better than him and most people would argue that John Terry is too.

He is good, I'm not saying he isn't but I think he appears 'heroic' and better than he is because he often throws himself towards shots to block them after poor defending has allowed the attack to happen in the first place.

Think about it, there must be a reason why he never got a game for England (under a few different managers) and why even at Liverpool he gets shifted to right back all the time.

I should also add that Carragher has a record of -3 goals for Liverpool, given he's scored 7 own goals. Pretty bad really.
