Capcom has confirmed a sequel to zombie shooter Dead Rising is in development.

Dead Rising 2 is set several years after the first game. Turns out no one managed to contain that pesky old zombie virus, and it's spread throughout the US.

The press release promises Dead Rising 2 will take the series to "a whole new level", originally, with "tens of thousands" of zombies to batter. There's an all-new "gambling paradise" called Fortune City to explore, plus new objects to use as deadly weapons.

The game is being developed in partnership with Canadian studio Blue Castle Games, who previously produced baseball title The Biggs. Some members of the original Dead Rising Team will help out, including Keiji Inafune - said to be playing " an active role" the development process.

Dead Rising 2 is in development for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, with a release date yet to be announced.

Re: Dead Rising 2 - ZOMBIES IN VEGAS

During a Dead Rising 2 session at GDC last week, Capcom quietly and perhaps accidentally revealed that the zombie hack-'em-up will include multiplayer.

According to IGN, one of the product managers on development software Mental Mill said that the technology allowed for players to see as many as 6000 characters on-screen during multiplayer.

What form multiplayer would take remains a mystery, but we're guessing the 6000 characters aren't all other players, so let's assume that whatever does go down will take as much advantage of the series' sea-of-zombies foundation as anything.

We're expecting to find out more about Dead Rising 2 in the next month or so, but for now we know that it's set two years after the first game in the Las Vegas-esque Fortune City, as the zombie virus that engulfed the Willamette Mall has spread across the country.

Re: Dead Rising 2 - ZOMBIES IN VEGAS

I think a co-op mode for this would be brilliant. Something where you share the same set of missions but you're left with problem of deciding whether you both take a mission each or go do one together. And maybe throw in a few character exclusive ones that only a certain player can do alone.

Capcom R&D kingpin Keiji Inafune has confirmed that Dead Rising 2 features multiplayer after all, despite confusion at GDC earlier this year.

"We're at a point in game history that you need to have some form of multiplayer component in a game," Inafune told journalists at Captivate 09 in Monaco last week.

"Single-player alone is not going to cut it. So rest assured we are going to put multiplayer in the game, but I can't go into specifics about what type of multiplayer as that directly relates to some of the game systems that we don't want to talk about at this event. It will be online multiplayer, so keep that in mind."

Inafune held court over an hour-long demonstration of the survival horror sequel, revealing that development partner Blue Castle Games manages to do 7,000 zombies on-screen at once - and showing us that in action.

You can read more about that demo and all the treats Dead Rising 2 has in store (double-chainsaw-fronted motorbikes, anyone?) in our extensive Dead Rising 2 preview, and check out the gameplay footage on Eurogamer TV.

more news

Capcom has said at X10 that Dead Rising 2 will be released in Europe on 3rd September, presumably for PS3 and Xbox 360 despite the Microsoft venue for the announcement.

However, Xbox 360 owners will get an "exclusive taste of the action" thanks to Dead Rising 2: Case Zero, a downloadable prologue that links the first game to the sequel, which sounds a lot like a fancy demo to us and is due out in August.

It will be "standalone and entirely consist of unique content that will not be in Dead Rising 2", according to the publisher.

Well the first one was kinda ok but it was when I'd just got my 360 so there was like 20 games at once I wanted to play so it never got much of a chance, I'd buy this just for the "doll" :)

Great video on this weeks First Play on the Playstation store. Not worth buying the episode for it but a nice video. I'm hoping someone uploads it to youtube or something so you can all see it but I don't know if they're being really strict about things like that on there. A quick search for ps3 first play is finding nothing so they might be.

They talk about the back story to the game. That it's set 2 years after the first and that the zombies have been contained and that people see them more as a form of entertainment.. so like there are tv shows based on people killing them and so on. Infected people can be cured or kept alive by taking a vaccine called Zombrex every 12 hours.

A little bit of extra news not in this but that will explain the story more is the 'Case 0 backstory' (exclusive to 360) where his supply of the vaccine is stolen from him and Greene and his daughter must now escape a gas station within 12 hours if she is to survive. Obviously you do and so that's where the main game starts.

Back to FP - So they mention that your character is now on the reality tv show to raise cash for more to save his daughter. And then while you're in the tv show something goes wrong and the zombies escape and spill out into Vegas and all hell breaks loose.

They then talk about how duck tape is the best tool in the game and it lets you combine weapons to make new weapons so if you have some circular saw blades and then pick up a broom.. you can fix the blades to the end and then use that asa weapon to hack the zombies up. They even talk about how you can use swords and that zombies are cut up depending on how you strike them. They then show your character splitting a zombie right down the middle from head down to groin and then the zombie peels apart.

It all looks great fun.

Capcom has said that Dead Rising 2: Case Zero will be released on 31st August and exclusively on Xbox Live.

This will cost 400 Microsoft Points (£3.40/€4.80).

Case Zero serves as a prologue to Dead Rising 2, introducing main character Chuck Greene and some new gameplay elements. You'll pick-up the story two years after Dead Rising 1 and three years before Dead Rising 2, and find Chuck and daughter Katey trapped in the zombie-infested town of Still Creek.

You'll be able to duct tape weapons and objects together, just like in Dead Rising 2, and any "player levels", "prestige points" and "combo cards" earned will carry over into the full game.

Dead Rising 2 will be released on 1st October for Xbox 360 as well as PC and PS3

Dead Rising 2 date pushed forward in Europe

Capcom has confirmed that the release date for Dead Rising 2 in the European and Australian markets has been brought forward to Friday, September 24th.

Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners will be pleased to get their hands on the game first, as North America and Japan dates remain unchanged at September 28th and September 30th respectively. The PC version releases on September 28th.
