Anderlecht's Wasilewski leg break

It is horrific, but let's put thing just a litle bit in perspective.
Since last year's test matches there is a very bad atmosphere around that match. What happened ?
At the end of the season both Standard and Anderlecht had equal points and so two test matches had to decide which one of both teams would become champions. Anderlecht were pissed off because they lost the championship in injury time of the last match when Standard's keeper stopped a penalty from Gent's Bryan Ruiz. If Ruiz had scored, Anderlecht would have been champions.
Anderlecht were outraged because they were certain that Ruiz would play for Standard next (this) season. Ruiz has indeed left Gent but plays for Twente now.
Then came the test matches. Standard was clearly the better team and there was some history around Wasilewski who should have been excluded. In the second match Anderlecht once again was outraged because Standards keeper Bolat "broke Boussouffa's jaw"...afterwards Boussouffa was fair enough to say that it was an accident.
At the start of the new competition there was much ado about the repeated elbows that Wasilewski threw in the faces of several attackers...he should have had 2 or 3 red cards.
Yesterday evening things got out of hand and Witsel made this horrific foul on Wasilewski. Afterwards Witsel was as shocked as everybody else. People who where near the incident are quite sure that he never had the intention to injure Wasilewski...and certainly not in this horrific way.

Am i trying to defend Witsel ? Not at all...he was rightly sent off for this "tackle" and in case like this one could thing about heavy sentences...(like a ban for as long as the victim can't play).

With this post i only wanted to put things a litle bit in perspective.

PS: i'm not a Standard fan although i like them much...
PPS: i hope Wasilewski will be able to play again and this as soon as possible.

Fuck me that is horrible!

Gerd - Why didn't they just use goal difference, goals scored, head to head records etc to decide who won or were they all the same too? Seems strange this way.

I really hope it wasn't delibrate from Witsel, he is a very promising young player and it would be a shame to taint his career with this.

Judging by his reaction, it doesn't look like Witsel is too bothered about what he's just done, but then it's only a short clip.

You have to look at the way he attempted the tackle though, I'm quite sure if he was going for the ball, he wouldn't have gone in like that.

Matherto: the only one who really knows if he wanted to hurt Wasilewski is Witsel himself and he will never admit that he did it on purpose (nobody would do that). What i do know is that there is some history between "Wasyl" and Witsel...
Wasilewski is considered the hardest and most brutal player in the Jupiler League...

Jumbo: we had some strange rules until this season. Now Anderlecht is still moaning that in any other European country they would have been champions. To me, that is bullshit...they knew the rules so they knew what to expect...and every neutral will tell you that Standard was by far the best team last year...

This year there is a reform with some sort of aftercompetition. When al lthe teams have played eacht other. The six best teams start a competition to decide who will become champion. THe teams get half the points they acquired in the regular competition and play twice against eacht other...

Ban for his whole life!20 years old kid, smiling like he's 8 when he just broken Wasyl's leg!

In Poland:
Public Enemy no.1
Witzel
no.2
Howard Webb

I would ban players who deliberately cause grave injuries with the same ammount of time the injured is out of the fields (like in this case, to me it's quite clear he wanted to kick the player). Clear as that.

I agree with the first part of your statement. I'm not so sure about the second. The only who knows that is Witsel himself.

Anderlecht's medical staf thinks that Wasilewski will be out for about a year, but a doctor who has done operations on players with similar injuries (Nillis) thinks it still could mean the end of Wasilewski's carreer. He claims that whith injuries like this there is a big possibility of complications.

Like i said before: the rivalry between those two clubs is getting out of hand. Both Witsel and Standard's captain Defour have got death treats overnight.

I also think it's very important to look at the context of this incident. Wasilewski who is now the victim is known as the most brutal defender of the Jupiler League. There is bad blood between both clubs and both managers (not the coaches) have made comments before the matches that weren't exactly good for the overall atmosphere.

And then one can also ask about the need of individual awards in a team sport like football. Since Witsel was "elected" as player of the year (by the press) in january, he has struggled to confirm. This isn't the first time a young player gets the player of the year award and struggles afterward. To give individual awards in a team sport is nonsense.

Last of all: people should stop talking in terms of fighting about football. This thing is all over the papers here in Belgium. The Polish national team is preparing an international match and phoned some team mates of Wasyl for a reaction. They were understandably horrified. But then Polish national cach Beenhakker was asked about a reaction. He said that this injury is a great loss for the national team and that Wasilewski was one of the principal "warriors" of his team. He said he was certain that this will not mean the end of his carreer, because he's our "Schwarzenegger"....This choice of words is rather accurate (if not very unfortunate), that is exactly the way Belgian neutral football fans perceive "Wasyl"...

To end this on a positive note: off the field Wasilewski is said to be aa very nice and likeable guy.

Yes, but context doesn't change facts, and anyone who has played football knows he put the leg there to do pain. It's deliberate. He probably didn't want to injure him for so long, but he did.

It's just like with crime nowadays. If there were huge penalties for doing bad things, people would commit less crimes. If injuring a player carried months of penalty, or divers got 2 match suspensions, then things would go different, no matter what context. Maybe more players during the match deserved a red card, that I don't know. But this play is awful.

well thats my breakfast postponed for a while :(

shocking tackle. Dunno if he meant it, he might have meant to hurt him a little as he was frustrated but snap his leg like that?

What a horrible challenge! He had the intention no doubt about it. Maybe the outcome was not what he wanted but, then again, a professional footballer should know what could happen in a "challenge" like this. It's like if you punched someone really hard in the head to hurt them, but you'd left them in a coma. Nevertheless you should be held responsible in that case.

Sometimes people like these get the treatment of a child. But this time around I hope the Belgian Federation takes some serious action against that. And not just a ridiculous 3 match ban like the FA did with that almighty cunt Martin Taylor when he broke Eduardo's leg.

That's a very similar injury. I hope Wasilewski gets well as soon as possible. And by the time he does so, I hope this other guy is some place else, cause the polish defender doesn't look like the forgiving type.

I agree.

Today the Belgian FA will decide what the sanctions will be for Witsel.
Yesterday Anderlecht's coach (Jacobs, a nice and civilized man) announced that he will stop as a coach at the end of the season. He also asked himself if Anderlecht should play the return match in Liège...

I don't see any intention in the tackle to be honest, it was a ruthless tackle yes! But he tried to get the ball but as you see in the video the ball goes under the guys leg.

I do feel sorry for the guy, I hope he recovers quickly.

I actually thought the guy was just going in wrongly with his studs showing, I wasn't sure about the intention of breaking his leg.

I know when I play with boots, if someone is coming in to kick the ball away I do have the tendency to let my studs protect any follow through, I don't try to hurt anyone, just kinda protecting myself.

As Gerd says, it is only the player himself that knows.

No way. There's NO WAY on earth that you can ever defend a tackle like that. EVER. Nevermind going for the ball bollocks, you don't tackle like that. EVER. Absolutely sickening. He should be permanently banned.

I honestly dont think that there is any player (or lets say hardly any player) out there who wants to break his opponents leg on purpose, lets face the truth. I am sure Witsel himself was shocked, too, when he saw Wasilewskis broken leg but that doesnt mean that he shouldnt be banned for some time.

Fact is in football, you can lose concentration just like that. How many times have I played football in real life and mis-timed my tackle? To many times to count. The consequences were never as bad as this, but Witsel by the looks of it tried to get the ball but did it with his studs up. He deserved the red, and I would not be surprised if he got a minimum 2 match ban. But to ban a youngster in which I doubt he is a skilled tackler (playing as a midfielder) is just harsh and unfair on the poor lad.

Anyone who tackles like that with the studs up and forcefully pushes down, knowing the opponent's leg is there, shouldn't play football again.

Matt and FD, I'd think twice before playing footie with you.

There's no way he was going for the ball that way unless he wanted to pierce it with his studs.

"Harsh and unfair to the poor lad"? It's unbelievable how people patronize those players. The same old bullshit always comes up - "the guy doesn't know how to tackle". The same thing was said of Martin Taylor. It's unbelievable people actually worrying about the tackler's career instead of it being the other way around.

A 2 match ban would suddenly sound like a bad idea if you were in the receiving end of a tackle like that wouldn't it?
